3 of us will be hunting rangely 3 rifle too. we are hauling a trailer and 3 four wheelers, We will be camping outside of town. We have deep freeze and generater for meat and capes. Burnt our 20 pp. Hope you luck too.

We just got back from an elk hunt in unit 21. We paid a pretty high trespass fee to hunt " a thousand acres". Very long story but their wasn't an elk anywhere on the thousand acres nor the BLM ground South of it. We got SCREWED! There were no elk any where along the river bottom from Rio Blanco Lake to Meeker, nor were there any hunters.....wonder why? We were screwed by Western Outdoor Adventures..Jeff Musgrave. He has a difficult time telling the truth.

Sorry you had a bad hunt but I don't believe it is the outfitters fault. That country holds very few elk unless weather or hunting pressure pushes them. With the rifle seasons all being a week late this year that gave the animals an extra week between archery and rifle to disperse. I have seen some amazing animals taken out of that country you just have to be in the right place at the right time.

Well WooD9 I appreciate your input but you were not there to hear what I was told. I have been hunting elk for a very long time and in fact was an outfitter for three years with 30 head of horses etc. so I do know a thing or two about it. There had not been any elk in this property for at least six weeks. The guy really did not tell us the truth about a lot of things, the lack of elk being down on the list. Oh I forgot to mention I have taken 32 elk in my life and have hunted all over North America and Africa.

I've hunted 21 for years 1st season elk and did well but the last few year the elk heard has gone down hill I'm hunting 3rd season this year to see if it's better

Sorry I was not trying to question your abilities at all and obviously don't know what happened between you and the outfitter. I was mainly stating that unit 21 can be really hit or miss in the early seasons which is out of the control of the outfitter. Now if he told you before you came there was elk in there when there really wasn't I understand why you would be pissed.

What had happened was we usually hunt #21 on a private ranch and that ranch got sold in July so we were not able to book with any of the reputable outfitters for that unit and we had our permits. This guy has been in business for two years and I am sure is trying to get business anyway he can and we needed a place. We have done very well in #21 but the area that holds elk is pretty small in comparison to the size of the unit. I think your chances for success on public land are pretty slim in that unit. I did not take offense to your comment just needed to clarify my post.

There are no trees in #21. The smallest I have ever tied up was 365, but that was right after the dry land appeared.

Yes I do, and thought of that exact incident, was thinking holy crap is this the same guy.... lol I always talk about that guy shooting a llama in MT
