Colorado 44 4th season buck

My dad drew a Colorado unit 44 4th season buck tag. This is his once in a lifetime tag and I want to do everything I can to help him achieve his dream of harvesting a 200" mule deer. We've never hunted this unit, however we have gone over a few times in september and put some miles on learning the country. Mainly in the lower country where we expected them to be heading towards their winter grounds, but the way the weather is...its scary. Praying for some weather real fast. We're planning on setting up camp this fri/sat and scouting until his hunt starts.

Any information or insight on hunting Unit 44 4th season would be greatly appreciated.

I have never hunted 44 but have spent some time down there. Without weather that hunt could be really tough with the deer staying in the thicker country. With no weather in the forecast the only real thing goin for you is the late dates. I would just plan on covering as much country as possible and find the hot does!

LAST EDITED ON Nov-08-16 AT 07:03AM (MST)[p]Dittos. Move around a lot until you start seeing lots of does. Then slow down

Kind of ironic that lots of us used lots of points this year on the 4th season because it is so late, and its the one year the weather won't help! Our only hope is that the does are lower and the bucks follow. I will be out helping a guy with a buck tag, so I am hoping for a weather change too.

Yeah when I saw the post count I figured he would never show up again!

LAST EDITED ON Nov-26-16 AT 08:54PM (MST)[p]IMO 44 is the most overrated "trophy" units in the state. I burned my 16 NR points in 2012 on a year similar to this year. Without substantial weather it flat out can suck. Huge gamble for the amount of points it takes.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-27-16 AT 01:08PM (MST)[p]There is no "cake walk" 16 point plus gimme my 200 inch deer because i waited this long unit in this state. If you truly think that there is any "easy" trophy mule deer unit in this state you are dillusional. Big mule are tough to find and even tougher to kill. Any seasoned muley nut knows that. There are so many variables that go into making these late season hunts go as planned and weather as we all know plays a big part. Anyone who has spent the time in 44 knows its genetic potential. There is a reason eagle county is #1 in the books for typicals and is the the first choice for gov tag holders. The weather just down right screwed this year up. Even at that i personally know of a 234 inch nontypical and 205 typical being harvested on public land this year. Bochepus has a good point, no snow and weather can make it suck... but what doesn't suck when its 60 plus degrees and not a lick of snow? Any 3 or 4th season tag that takes a pile of points is a gamble im sorry. If you want a sure bet go pony up the cash for a gov tag or go to the expo and dump 300k on the island tag

So correct Co Boy. Except that Alcatraz tag went for 400k LOL. Speaking of GOV tag, has the hunter punched his tag? Heard there was a HODAD in a neighboring unit??

There is an old saying about 30" mule deer, it holds true for bucks that score 200" or more.

"Even where there is alot of them, there aren't very many"

Thought they changed the law to where they can only hunt to the last day of the legal season (normal tag holders/4th season)... If that is correct then he is done, right?

When they first started the GOV tags it went to Jan 20th. Then for several years it clsed on December 31st. Now it believe it's Nov 30th.

Sorry fellas for just now getting back. Been a crazy week. To our misfortune, my dad never did get a chance to notch his tag on a 200" buck. However, we stuck to our plan and passed on a dozen of 180s throughout the hunt, still holding out for a buck that was the next caliber. Friday after the snowstorm was an unreal day of hunting for bucks. The snow had the deer moving and early morning we had two 190+ bucks working does on the hillside in front us, so we left them as our plan B and moved to another area where we glassed another 3 bucks over 180. Next few days, the deer movement died down and we hadn't laid glass on anything worth pulling the trigger on, so we headed over to try and relocated the 2 190 class bucks sunday. We only located one of the bucks and he was in a bad spot so we just got setup for the evening hunt and was waiting him out all day. He was a giant 3x4, with ginormous backs and we estimated him to be 32-34 inches wide, and close to 190-195. His body dwarfed every other buck on the mountain, so we had an idea he was running the show up there. Of course like a big buck would do, he didn't come out to push does until the last 30 minutes of shooting light. And once he did, he was rutting so hard he never gave us any time to get on him. We ended up running out of shooting light and we were never able to get a shot. Oh well thats hunting. We talked to the game warden and he said that the last two seasons have been scary cuz the deer are just scattered all over the place and that he nervous about not a lot of people were being successful and quota was low. We talk to other hunters and they were in the same boat as us. Lot of guys with 16+ pts that were holding out for the big bastards. Best thing is my dad and I dont have any regrets on the hunt. We hunted our assess off and gave it everything we had and stuck to our guns of harvesting a big buck or bust. Thanks again to all that gave us information and advice. It was much appreciated!

I applaud your dads and your will to hold off. I don't see myself holding off on a 32-34 inch buck like you described, even on a tough to draw tag. Then again, I've never had a tag like that, I always burn my points to early.

Legitimate 190+ bucks are big I don't care where you are. Congrats on your will power.....I guess. I know I woukd have been throwing lead haha

Thanks for getting back and letting us know how it went. Sorry you did not find a smoker, but at least you had a good hunt. It is pretty common for guys with low post to jump on here and ask for help but never report back. Thanks for the update.

Just to clarify... How many bucks did you see that went over 180?

Didn't get to punch my tag. Talking to the CO he said it was the toughest hunting conditions he's seen in 30 years.

Having said that it was a great hunt. Hunting pressure was almost non-existent. It was like having a huge private ranch all to myself.

The rut was full blown. Every day I witnessed rutting rodeo's. It was crazy with as many as 6 bucks in one group chasing does and each other.

I saw 165-170 bucks everyday. With the two largest (on public land) the day before season in the 175 class.

I found the thicker the timber the larger the buck. In the open aspen 140-150, in the aspen pine mix 150-160 and in the lodgepole, spruce, fir the 165-170 bucks.

No regrets. I was holding out for a 180 buck. The biggest buck I saw was a 185 on private land right off the brush creek road at about 30 yards. He wasn't the least bit concerned about a guy in an orange hat driving a 4-Runner.

Quality hunt all the way around-can't do anything about the weather.
