3rd season

LAST EDITED ON Nov-11-16 AT 01:13PM (MST)[p]I have scouted a few units in Colorado for deer. Unit 62 being one of them. I just am curious what is a better strategy for a NR? Hunt a unit that you can draw almost yearly? Or wait to draw a really good 3rd or 4th season rifle tag? It seems like a lot of guys wait a decade or more for a tag in an awesome unit like 66 or 67 and then eat tag soup because they have never set foot in the place before. seems like a bad idea to me? I apologize for the title of this thread I have no idea what I was thinking when I posted it up haha.

My opinion is you will do better by going more often and getting to know a unit then you will by hunting it only a couple times a decade.

My hunting spot is so secret, not even the elk have found it yet.

I agree, hunt the same unit as often as you can. Sure some units hold a higher percentage of big bucks. However they still are not as thick as internet/people make it sound. Many hunters get premium tags and end up shooting an average buck or nothing...

I just hunted 3rd season, finished this morning. I seen 132 bucks in 4 1/2 days of hunting and seen one 180+. Seen 3 that were 170 and a handful of 158-165 bucks.
I also spent 20+ days of scouting this summer and fall, so I looked over a lot of bucks. Out of all them I seen only the one that was over 180 and 3 170 (all during hunt). It is in a fairly good unit too known for producing some big bucks. I am definitely not the best deer hunter out there but after all them and I only seen one 180+... I really think the more seasons (opportunities) you have the better off you are.
I learned a lot about my unit this year, it was the 4th tag I had in there and I'm sure I will still be learning a lot about it after the 10th tag... Its nervous and stressful burning 10 years or more worth of points on a unit you never stepped foot in before June/july to start scouting for that fall....
