Hello...
I am a resident looking for info on Colo Rifle Elk Drop Camps... Type of terrain, quantity of game seen... camp conditions... etc.
Have a good friend and son-in-law that will be on their 1st elk hunt... OTC draw or zero points...

Hope some of you have done this and have some info... good/bad/ugly...

Thanks!

Go to Colorado Outfitters Association and there you will find all the information you are looking for. CAUTION: check as many references as you can. There a ton of unethical outfitters. The Northwest area of the state has the most elk with about every type of terrain. If you are serious you will need to get on it as most of the best outfitters will be booked really soon.

May want to look at J bar H. We have hunted with Jeanne 7 times. All drop camps. Top notch outfit in every aspect. I really don't think you would go wrong. The only down side she may be booked up for the next couple years. Mostly repeat hunters.

Not sure what kind of experience you are looking for but hunter success on bull elk on public land in OTC or 100% draw units is usually pretty low, maybe 15%.

A trespass fee hunt with someone like Rocky Mountain Ranches that advertises on this site would probably be a lot more successful. Maybe 40% to 50%.

On a drop camp you will get to ride a horse or have to ride a horse, depending on how you feel about horses. No horses on the trespass fee hunts.

I always say the ground you hunt on is more important than who you hunt with.

If you get narrowed down to the unit you want to hunt then Toprut is a good web site to get draw odds but it will also give you the hunter success for each hunt. Colorado Game & Fish web site has all of this info also but Toprut is a lot easier to look at.

But there are residents that post on here that do pretty well on OTC public land units but I think they have put a lot years and effort learning where to hunt.

I hunted with J Bar H years ago, excellent experience in every way. They are booked years in advance, any quality outfitter should be .

Beware of any outfitters that aren't willing to give you plenty of references.
