10 NR Points-Deer?

Not even sure I will apply for a tag next year but want some thought on what you'd do in this situation.

Drew deer, Unit 61, 3rd season back in "07." Told myself at that time I would never wait that long again to hunt Colorado deer. But with many irons in the fire each year between my wife's, son's and my applications, here I am again.

Here are my thoughts for 2018:

61, 3rd season

66 2nd season

Or I wait another 5 years for herds to recover and try to draw 66 3rd?

Your thoughts?

So what did you come up with? I've got 10 deer non res and have no idea what to do. I'd like to draw out so I can start points over even with my 3 sons.
Thanks, BS

61 3rd took 11 non res for a 33% chance of drawing this year.

66 3rd took 16 non res for a 37% chance of drawing this year.

I would look at 44,61 or 66 2nd rifle. Probably not as good as 3rd but you won't draw with your points. The bucks are still there just have to work harder to turn them up.

Where are you coming from? Can you make scouting trips?
I would pick a place you can definitely draw, and take a scouting/fishing/backpacking trip somewhere This August and see what you find. A place with plenty of deer and good size will likely be similar next year. Use your points there with confidence. To be clear, every unit in Colorado holds big deer, but none of them give them up without scouting and effort, so you're better off going with the time of year and method you want to hunt in a lesser known unit that you have some familiarity with.

No way to summer scout. Too far away in the Communist Republik of Kalifornistan, and all my vacation's are burned up on wife's tag and two jr tags this fall. I've hunted 54 once, and 72/73 3rd a couple times. Those are the only units I have experience in. So it's totally blind for me. I wish CO would let me split my points with my sons.

You could kill A deer without scouting in a new unit, but it would be hit or miss, and I doubt you'd kill one worth 10 years of points. I highly recommend a scouting trip, or going back to one of those areas that you've been before.

Just FYI, I cashed in my 9 points last year on unit 22 third and was a little disappointed. Without the weather it just wasn't what I thought it would be and I wish I had my points back.

Ya Mudslinger, I've heard mixed reviews on 22. Some say it's a flop, some say it's a great hunt. Idk what to do. I've been told 70 3rd season also, but then a buddy hunted it, and was less than impressed.

10 points is a handful, but it's not a whole bunch. I just feel asinine burning em on a 1-2 point unit. Oh well, I've got a year to figure it out!

I would feel asinine spending 10pts on a tag and not killing a deer, when I could have gone hunting in a 1-2 pt units and killed a great deer.

I have a 2 point tag, and I'll post a picture of the deer I kill.

I've been checking on many different units too just like you-- I have 10 points now. Some hunters have told me that 61--deer-- is way way down from what it was or used to be anyway. I'd be wary of that unit. But 66, 3 rd season, might be a good one to consider for next year, if this winter coming up is not a killer winter.
I have a 61 elk tag this year-- first 5 day season-- so I may find out some things about the deer while doing recon/scouting this year for elk. Not certain of even going hunting there this year, terribly dry there right now & last season was a bust there.

I would not waste that many points on seventy 3rd. After hunting it hard from sun up to sun down last year while helping my brother with his tag, I think it's in real bad shape. Just glad he didn't use his points for that hunt, as he picked up a leftover tag. We were really looking forward to learn that unit as we could have drawn it this year.

Sixty-sixty second season is a fun hunt that is not weather dependent because the deer live in the unit from timberline to the lower sage. I used my points on that hunt a couple years ago and have zero regrets.

Twenty-two third is definitely a weather dependent hunt. You will still see plenty of deer without snow, but finding that big one could be tricky.

I would find a 3 point unit and take your boys. More eyes in the field, someone could get a good one. Plus your memories hunting together will be better than hunting alone
