Elk units

I'm from southern Utah and want a chance at getting a bull. I still have a long time before I can draw here in utah. So I decided to put in for az next year. Any advice on which unit I should put in for with a chance of drawing with no points or a unit that doesn't take ten years to draw. I was thinking 5b general or 5b late muzzy. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. And I can help with Utah units in exchange. Thanks

I think that's very tough....and highly improbable. I believe you may have a chance in a few years, depending on hunt and weapon choice. I've drawn four archery bull elk tags in 21 years.....not highly sought after units, but the bull elk hunting was good.

If you apply for the late(November) general rifle, muzzy or archery hunts you will have a chance in nearly all the units you apply for. Most NR's apply for the more coveted early hunts. I met some hunters from Washington state on a November 6a rifle hunt 2 years ago that said they draw an AZ late rifle hunt about every 2 or 3 years. They did have their AZ permanent bonus points for hunters safety class and their loyalty bonus point.

Supposedly, AZ G&F is going to change the rules for NR's and only give a maximum of 5% of available 10% NR tags in the 20% pass. If this goes through then all NR's will have a CHANCE to draw just about all hunts (even early hunts) no matter how many points they have. First they have to change the rule though. I heard this was going to happen in 2016 or the following year. Better to start applying now to build points.

My recommendation for any NR with max points right now is to apply this January because their wait will probably be longer after this years draw. The rule will be good for guys who got in the game late and do not have a lot of points. The new change will probably be bad for the NR's with the most points.

Good luck & good hunting.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-07-14 AT 09:12PM (MST)[p]Get your permanent hunter ed point by coming down and taking the special 1 day non-resident class. Keep applying for 5 years and get your loyalty point which you keep as long as you apply every year. You do have a chance on any of the late hunts in the second pass with the shortest odds on the second late season rifle hunt in 22N. AZ considers your first and second choices when your app comes up. It takes several years to draw a tag in AZ unless you are extremely lucky, but easier than UT.

CO over the counter and MT are about the only sure tags for elk.
