OTC Late Archery Deer Thread

I wanted to get this going ahead of the upcoming archery rut season that will be here next month. I've killed one deer in AZ with my bow in Jan. Been out twice and going back this Jan for a third time.

Deer densities are low and big 170"+ bucks are tough to come by but do exist. Last year we took the season off and hunted 2B in NM during Jan. This year, I am looking forward to getting back in the warm AZ sun and thawing out (no punched tag in 2B although we had a couple decent opportunities).

Who else is hunting this late archery season and what bucks have you seen or taken? Please keep the areas generic as no one that has spent a ton of time to find good deer wants to talk about it online.

2012 first mule deer, ever...I crossed that grand canyon in the back ground and waited on the other side. This buck and a much bigger buck fed up over the canyon wall 40 yards from me. The buck I shot was in front and I didnt realize the bigger buck was in the back. Oh well! I was happy to have my first mule deer monkey off my back and it was an exciting 3 hour/2 mile stalk.

I'll be there again......haven't missed a late season archery hunt there in over 30 years. Been very lucky over the years in the AZ desert units.

I'm going for the first time come January. I want a coues really bad but my two friends that are going with me want muleys so we are going to hunt the central part of the state. My goal for the hunt is any coues buck period or a mature 5 1/2+ year old muley. 2016 can't get here soon enough!

Here's a few AZ desert muleys I've been fortunate enough to have taken during the late archery season.

Roy --- You've been hard at it!!!Nicely done, 7x's! When is your preferred time to be in the desert getting at it? We are going from the 3-8th this year. In the past i've been there around the 20th of Jan.

I've found that the first two weeks of January have been the best time.....Coues are a little later
