Some NM legal questions

I'm considering buying some property and NM has hit my radar. Some questions...

Is there a minimum property size required to obtain landowner elk tags?

Can you get LO deer tags too?

Is there a minimum age to hunt big game in NM?

What OTC tags are available? Archery is fine.

You're probably better off call NMG&F and get the info you need straight out of the horses mouth. There's too many different answers.

That is good advice.

No minimum age I believe, they must pass hunter safety. My son was 7 or 8,

LO (private land) deer tags depend on unit.

Left over tags every year, but, most are tough hunts. All deer and elk are draw. Some otc tags available for ibex and barbary where NMGF does not want a population of those animals.

Paul I hope you're right on the legal age for youth hunters. I would be quite happy not having to wait until my son was older than that for him to join me. Was that for big game that you're son hunted at 7/8 yrs old?

No age limit. If they are under 10 the hunter safety instructors will read the test to the kids as a group. At least that is how it worked for my boy last year. He was 8 at the time.

+1 Logan, my boy passed it at 8. The test was not read to him, but I do believe it was an option.

Son killed his first deer at 7 or 8 years old. Brings back memories. Best hunting partner ever.

This year Game and fish changed the age for hunter safety to min age to 11. My sons have summer birthdays. I assume that he can't hunt until he is actually 12 because he has to have hunter safety to apply. Deer, antelope, and javelina can be hunted with a mentor younger.... No mention of waterfowl or bird hunting either. I'm pretty frustrated about the whole situation having 2 sons.

I am pretty sure the online one is 11 but the class still doesn't have a age limit.

You are correct. The 2 day courses for 11yr. and younger fill up fast, and are limited. My son passed at 7yrs. I witnessed 2 parents flip out when their kids didn't pass.

I believe that the proclamation states that the hunter must be of legal age at the time of the hunt not the time they take the class. So as long as their bday comes before opening day they should be good.

That's the law for youth hunts , they cannot apply when they are 17 for a youth hunt if the hunter will be 18 during the actual hunt. The two day course has no minimum age.o obviously toddlers are out lol but reasonable age.

I hope that you guys are right about the reasonable age restriction. The 2016-2017 procolmation says that the 2 day course does not have an age restriction. It says that there is an age of 11 restriction for the field course. It says that both must be passed to get a hunter safety card.

Field course involves shooting.
