Just got back from a weekend camping trip to 16D. Didn't draw elk this year so we figured we would check out the elk instead. Saw a few bulls in the 330" range and a couple of smaller ones. Bunch of cows too. Actually saw a lot considering I was dragging along my two boys. On Saturday morning (first light) there was a helicopter flying all over D and A about 200 feet up. They were looking at the elk in both units. Figure this must be the governor tag holder? They checked out a few Bulls around us then took off towards 16C. Talk about some high dollar scouting.

For those of you that have rifle tags they are all over the place, just not sounding off too much. On both Saturday and today they were done by about 7:30 with the exception of one group in 16A that was going at it hard up until I left about 9:30.

Funny i went up to valle vidal this weekend to see the colors and hear the elk and there was a chopper there too hovering real low low low like barely above tree line we talked to the camp host he said the same they were doing elk counts as well?

They,ve been doing their counts this time of year for a long time,The only ones it hurts is the muzzy deer hunters.
They have been so close on top of us I can actually see the Dept logo on his jacket

This is crazy, I was hunting in unit 45 Pecos Wilderness for deer, did manage to tag a nice 4x4 but I have never seen so much elk in the 330-340 range, suddenly here come a helicopter flying around again about 150-200 feet scattering the elk. There goes my scenery running into the timber.
