Has nobody gotten an ibex this season?????

LOL yea how did they think that OTC ibex tags in the Floridas were a good idea??!!!! It's just like that article I just read in that NM outdoors paper about how they can't figure out why the mount Taylor elk herd is hurting so much. They tagged 13 calves and in 6 months half were dead. Hmmm, maybe there is a predator issue. Here is another possibility, maybe because Grants is right there next to the mountain we may have too much poaching.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-24-16 AT 10:06PM (MST)[p]NMDGF issued like 450 nanny depredation tags the last last few years and had over the counter the year before.

My understanding is that BLM wrote a report about ten years ago saying that the population is over objectives. I read the report last year-- I found the assertion in the report that the ibex population is over is not based on any science at ALL. The BLM requirement to reduce the population is entirely subjective based on the assumptions of a few people. To be fair those people probably had a requirement to make a best guess population recommendation without having proper funding to even know how many animals lived on the rock pile when writing the report!!

The BLM report also said something to the effect that the population at the time of study was about right but should be reduced slightly. The biggest problem is that there was never a detailed population survey at the time of writing the BLM report. After a detailed survey was conducted it was too late to change the non-science based population objective number dictated by BLM... there were way more animals up there once someone decided to actual count them so NMDGF is required to kill a 1000-1500 (I don't know the real number but it's a lot)

Appolgize if I got any of the details wrong...

Still plenty of goats on the rock pile. I was up there on a depredation hunt this spring and saw quite a bit in the 2 days there hunting. Does anyone on here have an up coming muzzy or bow hunt?

When I was gonna go with my wife last yr on a hunt, the guide we were using said the herd is around 700 and he's hunted them since they were introduced. He's now in his 70s. His opinion is that they are overpopulated.

I was lucky, and drew an archery tag, and killed a Billy, when they were over-populated.... Hell of a lot of fun. Can't wait to do it again one day

Congrats

Thanks. I'd like to say I toughed it out for 13 days and then made an incredible stalk, and shot..... Truth is, I was in the right place at the right time, and did manage to make a good, long shot. Used up a lot of goat-luck on that one. Hope to do it again one of these days.

I hunted for 10 days and missed a nanny at 48 yards, lots of wind and almost stepped on a hugh rattler along with lots of cactus thorns.

I still need to apply for this hunt. Let me get past the sheep hunt in 2 weeks and I'll see how I feel about climbing "the rock". Black/Bennett/San Andres will probably kick my butt enough lol!

I was on two depredation hunts last march helping out ( I love being on that rock pile) and there are still plenty of goats. We were done quickly on both. Not tough to find at all, just tough to get to.

Was also on the rock again in Oct helping a buddy...still plenty around. That being said, I wish they'd let them double in population so more of us could hunt them. I have some dynamite areas but haven't been able to pull a tag in 6 yrs so it's just a waiting game until I do. I still go up 3-4 times each yr for fun though.

I know of two archery goats and one big one on the O.I.L hunt. Of all my time up there, being in the right place at the right time is definitely the most successful tactic..ha ha.

Love those goats. Can't wait until Game and Fish let's me up there again with a tag in hand.

Yeah he is from the muzzy hunt. My buddy shot him , he is 39 inches, they saw a few that were bigger and one great billy, but he couldn't pass the shot on this goat.He had been shooting and had his Knight dialed in and solid shots out to 250 yards, and he got set up and when this joker passed by at a whopping "14" yards it was too good to look past....The picture doesn't show it but the goat is on a steep ledge, had to use extreme caution just to get down on him and work him to get back up and out....

I love when stuff like this happens! Makes me chuckle.
Congrats to your buddy.

Funny how that works! When u have a rifle or muzzy tag, u could've shot them with bow. But when u have a bow tag, if only u had a rifle. Congrats to your buddy! Any billy is a trophy in my opinion.
