I'm new to posting on the site but have been reading for awhile. I was contacted by the game and fish asking if I was interested in a population reduction hunt in unit 34 anterless elk. As I won't have time to scout was hoping for any help on where to start in the unit. Any help is appreciated. Thank You t

I don't have any information to help, but I just wanted to say good luck on your hunt.
I know 34 has a decent population of elk, so I think you're in for a treat. Shoot a big ol fatty!

Population reduction hints usually happen in very concentrated areas. Yours could be different based upon the needs or goals of game managers. They may be having you hunt some private land if there's a problem with elk causing trouble for a landowner.
I'm not familiar with 34 but usually see elk when we go through there. Good luck.

If it's a population reduction hunt I'm sure the local game officer will point you in the right direction as that is the purpose of the hunt. If not just drive behind the Alamogordo escarpment and I'm sure u will find elk back there. You may even be able to hit one with your truck somewhere along that road. Lol

Sent you pm. Like mentioned before, in the past they set up boundaries for the depredation hunt. Let me know if it is the entire unit, or if they and blocking out some areas.

I'll be up there as well as my brother was contacted. 34 has a ton of elk...usually not an issue to find a cow. However, the weather is supposed to be brutal on Saturday so be prepared and good luck. We got snowed out this weekend while off on another adventure in 34 so it'll be wet and muddy at the very least. From what my brother was told, several land owners are opening their properties for this hunt and he didn't mention any other restrictions boundary wise. Should be a fun, and relatively easy hunt if the weather cooperates at all. Good luck!

+1 Especially if you buy him a tub of ice cream in return. ?

Cant ever just let someone be nice to me. I got feelings you know.

I don't think many of us are going to get much hunting done sat or sun. Weather.com, noaa and local sites are predicting over a 15" accumulation between Friday mid afternoon and Saturday evening with winds in the 40 and 50 mph range. Be careful to anyone out there. I think we may hold out until Monday depending on how bad it gets. Button down the hatches gents!

Think I saw your rig today...but wasn't 100% sure. Either way we passed due to weather yesterday and we're done quickly today! Congrats on the harvest!

Thanks NMPaul!

It was my brothers' first elk and he had a grin from ear to ear. Cow hunts are a blast and fill the freezer with some fine meat.
