Thoughts on unit 5 December Bull Tag

Was just trying to get a general feel for the elk migration into unit 5. I will do my part scouting all summer but I was wondering if anyone has any info to share?

I drew this late December hunt in 5B last year. I personally think it is over rated. 87 tags and a hundred lion hunters all in the same area. I am not exaggerating one bit for every elk hunter I saw two trucks with hounds barking and making all kinds of noise . In hunting hard all five days only saw two bulls together and saw maybe 5 bulls taken. The huntable area if we get good snow fall which you need to kick off the migration like last year in greatly limited to the North West part of the unit. I did try to hunt away from the crowd but almost spent the night twice. I suggest getting off the road on high spots and lating the road hunters push them to you.

Thanks for the info. I'm not in it for a trophy. Any legal bull will do for me. I'm gonna PM you if you maybe can send me in the right direction. I want to stay away from people. I hate the mall atmosphere when I'm hunting. I like solitude.

Scouting all summer is gonna do nothing to improve your chances at a bull in Dec. Well let me back up here. You will at least get to know the area and the roads.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-16-17 AT 09:59PM (MST)[p]Bowdeadly I have hunted this area and you can maybe access only 1/4 of the unit in December with a decent winter . Not to mention that the resident herd is very low numbers and very scattered and mostly in private. You need the snow to push the elk into the unit but with that the road and access is limited and the amount of lion hunters with dogs in unbelievable almost illegal.

Its a good hunt, you just have to put in the work like everyone else. The lion hunters have just as much right to be there as the elk hunters on that hunt.
