Congrats, any OIL tag brings a lot of pressure, don't let that pressure ruin the experience. Enjoy the prep, your friends, the harvest falls in there some place behind the experience/ adventures.

Congrats on drawing MY tag! Lol here's some inspiration for you from just up the road. I've got a band of 8 rams that greet me every morning heading to work. Two real toads in the group!

I might have your tag too!
I have been putting in for a sheep tag here for 35 years. I'm now 71 years old and I just drew a tag for the Gorge! I would love to find a toad like that one -- out of the gorge, by the road! After hearing the story of the successful hunter from last year who said if I had it to do over again, "I wouldn't recommend shooting one down in the canyon, unless they were in better shape than me", your 8 rams that greet you every morning heading to work sound really good!
I'm gonna need all the help I can get!

Paul ,
I see this is your first post. Welcome to mm !! 71 and drew my sheep tag?!! Dare you in decent shape? Do you have family to help you out?

I am in fair shape, I will be better... I have a son (45) who will help. My first sheep tag was in 1972, hunted the north rim (Kanab) of the Grand Canyon. But I was 25 and that was 46 years ago! Found sheep but weather ran us out! No tamale. Put in for 22 more years and drew another Arizona desert tag (1994)in the Cabeza Prieta. Success that time. Got a Dall in the Yukon in 1991. Hunted in Montana's Metcalf wilderness for a Rocky in the Unlimited Unit (1996), found sheep but no tamale. When I drew this tag, my friends said my luck was unreal. Actually, I just keep persisting. Shot a lot of Ibex on the Florida's behind my house here. That's a tough climb. I hope to have a great hunt, but I will have a lot to learn up in the Gorge. I have never hunted there. Open to all suggestions!
Thanks for your reply.

That luck is unreal!!! I hope you pull it off!
Paul, I sent you a message.

Feel the same way.... I drew a tag for the same hunt this year after putting in for a Rocky Mtn sheep tag for 35 years! I hear this Gorge is the best place to get one. Have you ever scouted this area?

That is exciting. Sounds like you earned your right to another sheep tag. Way to beat the odds. If you can handle the Floridas, you got this.

Congrats brother!

Enjoy every second of it!!! I have to admit I'm a little jealous. I can't wait to hear the story and see the pictures. Good luck !!!

A friend of mine saw a bachelor group of 10 rams off the highway near Pilar. If the link works that was the biggest she saw.

Looks like you should bring rappelling / mountain climbing gear. Have a great hunt. Keep up the great scouting photos.
Bill

It's hot! Lots of rams, nothing worth putting my tag on yet. Its early!
Governors tag hunter tagged out around August 8 on a nice ram, went about 179.

That's awesome that you are being patient. I hope you can find a bruiser. That being said, if and when you get one take a look at Bowdeadly's work. Geno is an award winning taxidermist.

Thanks brother for the kind words, NM has quit a few exceptional taxidermists, do your homework on taxidermy as you do on your scouting trip and you will select the right guy to preserve your trophy. Good luck and can't wait to see what you pull out of the gorge.
