So they wife drew unit sixteen speed Goat on the Mandolin PLR . In looking at the A-PLUS list it appears this ranch is operated by the New mexico Game and Fish which i find interesting It assigns 20 public hunters and no private so i assume maybe it was donated to the game and fish ?

Another note the place is huge 516,000 acres how does one scout that much in two days LOL .

RIO- chime in here please provide some insight if you know the nature of the ranch and why the department operates it? Anyone for that matter as im curious . If any of you have ever hunted it as well share your thoughts !

LAST EDITED ON Apr-20-18 AT 12:56PM (MST)[p]Is it 516,000 Private acres?

The ranch I was assigned to a few years back was 315,000 acres but almost all of it was BLM land.

According to the A plus list it shows 516k acres ? was this the ranch you were assigned to?

Early where you assigned to the Mandolin PLR? care to elaborate on the nature of it? Im thinking its actually public land ranch? which i have no clue what that is but im curious i have a call into the contact on the a plus site but no cal back yet

Sure, but I apologize ahead of time for my vague answer. I called the contact number for the ranch when I received the map. The ranch is managed by game and fish. Don?t recall that how that came to be. The ranch is large, but all acres are not continuous. Two parts close to one another. All I did as far as research was google earth. Found a high spot, hiked up, sat down and glassed. I heard a few other shots before I dumped mine. I picked the largest one I could see and closed the deal. Other than a Texas whitetail, this was the easiest hunt I've ever done.....sort of refreshing:)

I was in a different unit. Sorry! Should've clarified that.

The A-plus list should break the acreage down into enrolled private acreage and enrolled public acreage.

I suspect that with that much land a large portion should be public acreage and be accessible prior to the hunt?

LAST EDITED ON Apr-23-18 AT 11:16AM (MST)[p]PLR does stand for public Land Ranch. So the "Ranch" you are hunting is ALL public land and its a great area you will have a blast. NM Game and fish has the weird antelope system, (this is why they are trying to change it). When a land owner decide not to sign up there private and public lease land all the public lease land does not get hunted. Game and Fish started signing up all public land that had hunt-able antelope, has access and land owners quit or weren't signing it up. I think the name Mandolin comes from the private land that was being signed up in that area but quit so they went to the PLR. A buddy of mine had this tag last year and we researched all this stuff.

You got one of the best antelope tags there is so enjoy!!

My daughter drew the same hunt and same ranch. Sounds like it's going to be fun!

Does anyone know where this ranch is? I know it is in 16 and most likely 16E, but is it around Horse Springs or closer to Datil???

I know I can wait on the ranch map which should come in the mail in a couple weeks. I'm just anxious I guess.

I can't remember exact boundry but it is16e west side of Pelona Mtn, includes Colin?s park and T bar. I m pretty sure it includes sand flats in 15 too. It's a huge chuck of land

I spoke to the warden he emailed me a map its a huge area covers multiple units and its all public land not a private ranch as typicall for Antelope . so all 20 tags are going to be cluttered around the goats

The new A-plus system will have everyone cluttered around the goats on public land from here on out.

Atleast you have a huge acreage to hunt. Good luck.

On half a million acres, I'm hoping there are more then a few groups of pronghorn.

Actually, I'm kinda liking the ratio - 20 tags on half a million acres.

But just in case, I guess I could bring one of those pull tab number thingies that they have at the meat counter and we could just take a number.

im hoping so to however in review of the map only certain areas will hold the goats. and i think those will be fairly obvious for the hunters . the unit or area we can hunt encompass much of elk country we can only dream of hunting that time of year

You are right. From the descriptions and Google Earth I'm seeing that there is a lot of "elk country" and several different areas of "antelope country" on the ranch.

I'm hoping we can spread out enough to make the hunt fun.

My previous message was an attempt at some humor. I know sometimes that doesn't come across on these forums.

Good Luck on your hunt!

516,000 acres is 806 square miles.... That's a lot of land. I realize a lot of that isn't antelope country but it is still a lot of land.... I doubt you will see many other hunters.

I got a 11,000 acre ranch this year with one other hunter. I thought it was small then converted it to sq miles and have 17 sq miles to hunt. I am OK with that.
