There is very little critical thinking on this site. Sad state of affairs when you can't ask a question without being ridiculed. There are several guys/gals on here who are extremely helpful.
Good luck on the draw!

Gopher,
Here's a tip pick one of the three you mentioned and make it your 1st choice. Look for other units with better odds of drawing for your 2nd and 3rd choice if you want to increase odds of hunting elk in NM.

When you pick 3 prime hunts/units like you did you pretty much eliminate 2 of your chances of drawing. Go to gnf site they have info on how the random draw operates and might help you out.

Great advice.

For instance:

Unit 15 early muzzleloader for a Non Resident has a 2.5% chance of drawing
Unit 16A- Less than 1% or .66%
Unit 16D- your odds are still horrible around less than 1%.

Spend some time researching units with better odds.

Unit 9, for example, Muzzleloader has great odds for Non Residents. I would make that a 2nd or 3rd choice. The quality and density of animals will be less than a Gila Unit but at least you are hunting elk in NM.

Other possibilities: When i do not get a tag in NM i usually go to Utah or Idaho depending. Utah has a Spike only hunt. It is a great time and one of the cheaper non resident elk hunting opportunities.

Many options to hunt elk. all depends on what you want.

Unit 9 is a dumpster fire, when did you last hunt there? You'd have to pay me to take that tag!

Glad someone said it!

Not at all.
I'd be running to Idaho

once again thanks for the help and seeing my error and sorry for my earlier comment , These are units I went after 16a 16d 15. So what does 242 ,261 and 234 stand for. I know 2 are rifle and one muzzle. By the way is this area one the most coveted units. For a non resident it seems like drawing this tags is like winning powerball !

Yes all of those hunts are in the coveted Gila area, and are real tough to draw. The 242, 261, etc numbers are just the hunt codes. You can't just use a unit number because each unit normally has multiple types of hunts, or different time frames. It's all in the rules and info book.

You can usually improve your odds by going to some later hunt dates, or switching to archery, but they will still be tough in any of the Gila units.
