We drew 73 for pronghorn, will be going up for a scouting trip to get an idea of the quality of bucks and to get familiar with the roads. I like to drive my little civic any time possible to save on gas/maintenance costs. Would I be able to get around the majority of the unit on major roads with it or should I bring truck?
Thanks

You would be fine as long as it doesnt rain. That mud is some slimy stuff that 4 wheel drive trucks dont even like. I wouldnt risk it myself. That is a great tag in my opinion, have fun..

LAST EDITED ON Jun-22-16 AT 03:23PM (MST)[p]Personally I wouldn't drive any kind of a small vehicle like the OP is asking about out there. You may be able to get away with no problem on countless trips and then again you might have big problems the first time. Even a 4x4 needs chains on a lot of the roads when it gets wet if you get off the blacktop or gravel in Wyoming.

I like to nomad hunt when chasing antelope. That means the camp is packed in the truck each day and then I start driving and glassing with no real need to leave where I am at when the sun goes down. Just pitch the tent, cook a nice meal and hit the sack.
You can't do that in a little buggy.

The few extra dollars saved in fuel will easily be made up in peace of mind, should the weather turn nasty.

Life is the adventure that you make it! Take the Civic... Please post the details if it gets interesting. :)

Are we talking about a civic like this?

mntmn,

What is it with you Coloradans and your Civics? I work with a guy from CO and he exclusively drives his Civic all over SW Wyoming. He has taken it to Black Rock, Boars Tusk, Tri-territory road, GR wild Horse loop, etc. He said he is fine if he stays on the County roads. Only problem he has had was he lost some front end plastic on the last rabbit he hit. You should have an adventure either way.

lol,
if my civic looked like that I wouldn't have any worries :)
We are definitely taking the truck when we hunt.

I am curious as to if I can get around with the civic for a 2 day scouting trip this summer just to be somewhat familiar with the roads and get an idea of what to expect for quality of bucks. :D
I won't be going down no two track cattle trails with civic to scout, just curious if all the roads are crap besides the hwy that goes along the southern border of the unit...

There's a couple of decent gravel county roads that go through there, mainly on the east and west sides. The roads up north, like 33 mile, I wouldn't recommend with a car. Also, you may very well have good cell service up there, but in much of the area you are 50+ mi from the nearest reliable services, like Casper. The middle of the area is primarily primitive 2-track roads.

I like hunting antelope out of my Toyota Camry rather than my Honda Pilot. It worked last fall. The gas mileage difference really adds up.

Have fun and let us know how you do after the hunt is over.

Check the weather just before heading out. If rain is in the forecast I would be really careful. I have been chained up all the way around on the 33 mile road and felt lucky to get back to camp. In the fall the roads freeze up and that helps. I hunted about ten years out of a front wheel drive car. I went on a lot of two tracks. If they are not wet you can go about anywhere out there. Watch out for the rocks hiding in the grass.
