LAST EDITED ON Nov-30-13 AT 12:48PM (MST)[p]LAST EDITED ON Nov-30-13 AT 12:48?PM (MST)

When I was 16 I rented my own VHS copy of a deer hunt. The guys were hunting around Fort Peck Reservoir and they had a blast. That was 20 years ago but I have always wanted to go hunt that same country. I now have a 10 year old boy I want to start hunting with him by my side. Here in Utah I hunt in some steep country I wont take him until he is 13 or so because the hike will ruin it for him by pushing him too hard. I would like to hunt with him now though and am looking for a place to get a nice little buck each year. I am finally stable at work and home and have time to take a week and go to Montana. The dream of hunting Montana someday....and doing it with my boy....are about to become reality.

I have a few questions and appreciate any helpful information you can provide. Thank you very much for your help...in advance. If you would like to PM me I would appreciate that as well....probably even more. Don't spill the beans...just general questions that I could use answers to. I was looking at going just north of Jordan and to the West a little in the really "breaky" country by the lake...from the edge of the lake to about 3 miles away.

Also, I understand the following up front:

A. It looks like the area gets hunted hard
B. The roads are impassable when wet
C. The quality of bucks is not the best gut we are just looking for a place to have fun and get a crack at a buck with me and my boy without having to risk our lives on the cliffs on the Wasatch Mountains. :)
D. Optics are needed and I am good with my spotting scope and binos
E. The Charles M Russel area is only huntable during the first few weeks.
F. One of the best ways to hunt looks like from a boat but I dont own a boat.
G. Elk hunting is just over the counter archery or limited entry.

***My questions are***
1. Is this country I could hunt with my boy or is it too steep? The pictures I have seen of the area look decently flat with beautiful tree lined slopes.
2. Are the Breaks too steep for horses or should I bring them and ride from the top to the bottom and then back up?
3. I would like an area where he and I could see 30 deer or so per day and get a shot at a little 4 point sometime during the week. Are deer populations and densities good enough that we could find that?
4. Is it better to hunt the first or last week of the season on the CMR?
5. It looks like the odds of drawing are 100% pretty much. Is that what you guys see as well?
6. Is it better to hunt the area I have described (7) or would the deer hunting be better in region 6 just west of the Timber Creek area and down to the Blue Ridge Road area.

***Questions I need answered by the Fish and Game that you may know the answer to***
7. What is up with the A & B tags...I dont understand them.
8. Is there just a deer tag? How much does it cost? Do I have to put in for it? Do I need a combo tag or just a deer tag?

Thanks for your help. I will scout it in late August and then hunt it in November I guess. Pretty fun stuff....thanks again for any insights you may have....

You will need the NR Deer Combination.
Apply online before March 15th.
Drawing, but it hasn't sold out until later the last couple years.
Elk is limited draw, archery and rifle.
Antlerless tags are applied for by June 1st.
Hunting pressure is intense.
The CMR has everything from Rolling sage to some rugged mountain type canyons.

Shoot me a pm for more info, I know the Breaks very well.

Two guys sent PM's. Thanks for taking the time to help. I appreciate your time and willingness to help. I think I will try Montana next year. I am a little skeptical but it sounds like if I dig in I should find a buck. Thanks for your help...
