2016 Father/son non-resident hunt.

Hey hunters,

My son and I are doing some early planning for 2016 Muleys. This will be my first time hunting out of state and his first year hunting. Since ID youth age starts at 10, (my son is 10) we want to start there. We will put in for drawings but are planning on OTC tags for Muley and Elk. Considering archery as well. Any tips on what units to look into and/or general Idaho hunting advice is welcomed and appreciated. Not necessarily targeting trophy quality, but looking for success.

Thanks,
Kevin & Koehn

What kind of hunting experience do you have?

What kind of shape are you in?

Want to backpack hunt, or stay within a few miles of a road?

Give a little info and maybe we can help a little more.

In general, I'd say not to try to hunt elk and deer at the same time, and possibly not on the same trip. It is possible, but you will learn more by focusing on one at a time.

I'd consider weather and terrain if you will have a 10 year old and also if you aren't either use to it, have the right equip, or in the right shape.

There is a lot of good data to start with in the Huntplanner section of Idaho Fish and Game website.

Many on here will tell you how crappy it is here, don't listen. There are deer and elk to be had. If you get lucky you could kill some nice critters your first year. If you get unlucky, you will at min have a great time and see some great country with your son and learn about how to improve you "luck" in the future.

Feel free to PM me with some info and I might be able to narrow things a bit.
