Trying to decide

I have done some research and decided to try my hand at buy a OTC tag as a non resident, I am think between unit 52A, 56, and 76 I will be rifle mule deer hunting, I am not looking for anyone to hold my hand but to maybe help me decide what unit is the better of the three and maybe give me some info as to maybe where not to go in the unit. Once I purchase a unit, i will try and do a lot of scouting before the season. Thank you for all your help.

I also am confused as to how the whole purchasing of a OTC tag goes and when I should purchase one of these tags for the 2017 season? any help would be great thanks.

I'm out of the loop a bit to answer all of your questions but you should put in for one of the top tier tags in the draw. Only cost you a few bucks extra to throw your name in the hat, because you will already have your license and tag expense paid for. Just one more thing to add to your list.

Thank you , so from what I understand from what I have read is I can put in for a premium unit before The beginning of June and then put one of these units as my second choice and get them for sure ?

You first need to purchase a non res hunting license $152.00, then you can apply for a controlled hunt for $14.75. If drawn you have until August to purchase tag.

General season tags are available on a first come first serve basis if you don't want to apply for controlled hunt.

All those units have deer, however, most likely all you'll see is a 2x2. Those units are flooded with hunters, a great many of them are non residents who shoot anything with antlers on sight. Please be respectful of the locals as many of the non residents I've ran into are very rude and leave the spots they camp in full of garbage.

Hunted 76 for 25 years. Fewer deer this year than in the past 20. Seen a couple nice ones. Numbers are way down.

The non-residents like to hunt. If you look at the states they are from, they have turned into a battleground for tags. I really don't blame them for coming to Idaho for the opportunity to hunt. If I lived in Utah, I would be here every year as well. But we will hit a breaking point where we can't continue to do this. And I also think our deer herds are suffering from the residents buying second deer tags at discounted prices. It makes total sense. Why go to Colorado and spend all that time and money when you can shoot a second buck for 299.

I talk to a lot of non-resident hunters every year at my work and almost all of them are friendly and thankful for the opportunity to have a DIY, OTC hunt. There are always a few bad apples that represent the whole. And that's for every single aspect of life. I think we just have to take what we have, enjoy the process of the hunt, and not bad mouth anyone. Were on the same team when it comes down to it.

Yep, I didn't mind them before this year.

Had an out of state hunter screw our mule deer hunt in a couple of ways and I'll not give them the time of day henceforth. He was a decent guy, but it is what it is.

Went to "plan B" and came home and killed some fine whitetails right on our place, but I learned my lesson: no help or patience for non-Idahoans. Zero.

Especially sick of out-of-state Washington hunters illegally shooting onto our property endangering us and our livestock as well.

Damn those out-of-state hunters!! How dare they think they have access to the MY game on public land! Classic entitlement.
