39-3 either sex Elk hunt

My wife and I were lucky enough to draw the 39-3 either sex Elk tag. Not looking for anyone's spot at all, more than willing to burn some boot leather and not afraid to get off the road/ trail by any means. We will be scouting and researching of course as much as possible. All good hunts are earned for sure. My question is, what tips would someone who has hunted this area before be willing to share? Is weather a big factor on the quantity and availability of Elk? Is it possible to scout the Elk before season, not sure if it's primarily a migration hunt? How much pressure should we expect from other hunters during this hunt, Etc. thanks in advance for any tidbit you are willing to share. Greatly appreciated.

I have hunted up the little queens river. There are elk in there but it would be a long pack out on your backs as there are no motorized vehicles allowed. If you hunt that country you should hold out for a big bull to make it worth the effort.

Don't go hunt the little queens river as that is way outside of your hunt boundary. The 39-3 tag is south of the south fork and blacks creek road. The elk will primarily be found on private land although I have seen them on blm out there. I don't know if you were necessarily lucky to draw the tag as private access can be difficult in the area. Sorry not a lot of help but figured I'd chime in at least. Good luck and I hope you and the wife are able to tag out.

You are lucky to draw the tag. It's had great stats recently. Migration is defintiely a factor and probably affects the number of larger bulls down in the lower country. However, there almost certainly will be elk near the private property farms during your hunt. I think depredation of private property was the impetus for the creation of the hunt. You could also go a little higher in elevation if needed. Elk migrate down the SF of the Boise and from the Prairie area. They'll be out in the sage.

Should be a good hunt. Please report.

Hi,
My name is Ken and I drew the 39-3 for 2018 hunt that you had last year. I have seen some descent bulls in there during general deer season hunting, which prompted me to apply. How did your elk hunt turn out last year?

Thanks.

Look at it this way...at least you'll be able to come on here and say that you drew a controlled tag once!

I must be the exception, our family has drawn multiple tags, we always draw cows because we like to eat elk,and more importantly like being in the mountains. This year was really good to my grandson, son in law,and my self. a 45 buck, two 49 bull, and three extra cow tags. And by the way N.R.'S in no way are treated as second class,as they have the same chance to draw as residents,as the drawing odds report shows !!

You scored! Great tags and it looks like you will have a great year!

I truly wish I can report better results- the Elk never migrated during our stay on this hunt. a few cows running around- mostly hunters glassing south over to Bennett waiting for elk that were bedded on the flats.

Lol. It probably was a bad year to have that 39 3 tag. Those elk don't leave till they have to and we didn't have a real winter last year....

I'm sure he appreciates all of the help you gave in 39.

P.S. you could always move South to Utah or Nevada to get in on those points systems you seem to love.
It would probably be better than whining on bunch of random threads.
