Construction work in Idaho

Hi everyone, I'm contemplating a move to Idaho in the next few years possibly. Currently still weighing the pros and cons, but probably going to happen. The question is, where? I'm a custom builder now, mostly residential, houses, shops, garages, barns, and pole barns and small amount of commercial. I would like to continue doing the same thing. Unless we are too busy, we did all our own foundation, framing, flat work and siding. I'm in a small farming/ranching community now and would like to find something similar. Big cities are 2 hrs east and west with one to the north about 1.5 hours. I like quite a bit of shoulder room and very little traffic. Any recommendations? Is there such a place left?

The treasure valley is booming right now. I recommend either Melba or Middleton for some space and commuting just a little closer to the Boise area to work and stay busy. Everywhere is growing in this area quick, not sure about other parts of the state. Any other questions feel free to ask.

Idaho Falls and SE Idaho are booming right now, and I would expect to see continued growth in the 5-10% range for at least the next couple years. Construction firms and crafts have all they can handle presently, many with significant backlogs. If you are the owner/builder you might find it difficult to get qualified craftsmen hired from other established companies. Best of luck in your choice.

Melba I can agree with.....I wouldn't do Middleton myself but it all depends on what you like for living.
A guy can live in the timber at Idaho City and still be only 30-45 min from Boise.
Bruneau or Grandview if you like the desert.

Either way, its a fact that construction is booming right now. Good luck

I'd say you'll need to narrow down what portion of the state you're interested in moving to. Most of Idaho is growing extremely fast right now so you have a lot of options.

the central part of idaho (North of McCall south of Moscow) seems to be about what you are looking for. several small towns. I know quite a few guys that do what you are doing, and they all seem to have as much work as they want provided they have a good reputation for their work.
lots of fishing and hunting to be had. lots of public lands, and plenty of private as well. a guy building houses has plenty of trading material for hunting rights....

Thanks for all the responses, I guess I should further narrow it down. How about something in the trees/mountains with the desert being within 2-3 hours drive?

>Idaho is getting crowded. The things
>that have brought people here
>in droves are disappearing. Try
>Wyoming

It's fine if you don't want him to move to Idaho but don't be sending them to Wyoming... we are just fine here... we all live like heathens in mobile homes in Wyoming no need for a builder... lol

Not much timber in Grandview.

If you are in construction and want enough work to last you through when times are slow, then stay commuting distance from Boise, CDA, IF, Twin. Everywhere else will get real slow real fast. Even McCall, had all the builders exit, and it still hasn't fully rebounded from the downturn.
