WA Moose Hunting Story

Three years ago one of our hunting crew was drawn for a moose permit in the Three Forks unit. He spent weeks watching videos, practicing with moose calling tapes, doing research on the internet, as well as spending several weekends in the Three Forks scouting. One weekend he came back to the Skagit Valley with reports of a monster moose, one unheard of in Washington.
As opening day got close, myself and another from our crew wanted to go be a part of this momentous occasion. We arrived mid-day before the opener, set-up camp, and relaxed with a few adult beverages. Morning came and it was all business, we made a plan to lure the monster moose in with teamwork, the tagholder with the call, me thrashing the trees and brush next to the meadow, and our other partner watching and listening closely. After about 5 min we heard a large animal coming through the brush and then stop. We kept up with our plan but it never came all the way in.

After about an hour at this location we decided to split up and let the tagholder go do some serious hunting while we hunt grouse and try to locate some moose. We spent all day driving around, glassing, and dispatching an occasional grouse. Around the middle of the day we found a little bull winkle in the middle of the road several miles from camp. As it started to get dark we were on our way back to camp and decided to go back to our morning location and see if we could located the big boy. About a 1/4 mile from our turn around we came around the corner and "BAM", there he was, 50 yards away standing in the middle of the road. We looked at each other with really helpless feelings and decided to at least get a picture. By this time the moose was moving up the road away from us but we had plenty of time to get the camera out and the picture shown below.

We then went back to camp and replayed the incident to the tagholder who spent 30 full days hunting over the next two months trying to fill his tag and never saw the moose again. As time was running out, he decided to take a cow. Everytime our crew gets together, this story comes up by the camp fire. He blames us for chasing his moose away and we blame him for being a lame hunter.

I am in the 3 forks unit all of the time, you couldnt tag a big bull? give me a break.I see 2 or 3 50" bulls every time I am in there. The bull in the road I wouldnt even consider a shooter in that unit.Sounds like a lame hunter to me

That is not a shooter? You've got to be kidding me!!! I've seen a lot of photos of WA moose and that is a shooter.

Nope not to me, If I draw a tag here I will shoot a state record and hopefully a world record.A set of sheds found here on June 3 are on there way to be scored as the new world record sheds, they also found another set similiar but a little smaller. My buddy has a set that scored around 200". If it was down to the last 2 days I would shoot that bull.People see pics of moose harvested, most tag holders shoot the first bull they see or they do not scout enough to know what is running around here.I see monster bull moose around here all of the time,I know where a monster is right now in the huckleberry unit.I cant even begin to grasp the concept of hunting 30 days and couldnt shoot a big bull, all I have to say is WOW and what a disappointment for the hunter.

Sounds like a blowhard to me.

I wish I could see so many top of the record book animals and know exactly what tree they live by. But....never have killed one or even helped a buddy kill one. Give it up way too obvious.

Hey Shanewa...put up or shut up. i'd like to see these 50 inchers on film please, and I would even let you do the ones on private land. As for 200 inch sheds. Give it up dude. You've been smokin' some of that Republic Gold. I honestly wouldn't judge anyone for not notching a tag, but an unrealistic blowhard...

wow.
that's a whole lot of confidence there.
sounds like utah with the 400 bulls behind every tree.

Where do you guys live? West side of the state, that would explain it all.You guys act like moose hunting is hard.Another question have you ever hiked the mountains in the selkirk,49 and huckleberry? There isnt a trip to these mountains where i dont see big bulls.200 inches is being fair,if you want would you like his e-mail? maybe you could talk to him yourself. The sheds found this year are 240+ and I have seen them in person. Its ok to be jealous.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-18-07 AT 10:30AM (MST)[p]jealous of what?
tell your buddy he can e-mail the pics to me...i still won't be jealous, but i'd love to see the pics.

Now the sheds are up to 240", mmmm... I live in the Huckleberry unit and frequent the other 2 you mentioned and I have never seen any that big around here. Either someone doesn't know how to correctly measure or they are going to show us some they found in Alaska. I would like to see those pics too.

Without knowing the spread how does one get to 240" with a shed? The world record Canada moose is 242" You think you know where one lives up in the Huckleberry that big? That would blow away the current record by approximately 40". Any pictures of these monster sheds? Blah blah blah. I got a case of beer for anyone that wants to bet this _________ (insert appropriate word like blowhard) never posts any pictures on this thread. Any takers?

awesome bull thanks for sharing!!!
i cant wait untill i draw..
how many points did it take you?

thanks
great story

He won't post because they don't exist....what a dork...and looks like one also...oh because you are from one side of the state you are stupid..no.... stupid is those who post and can't back it up. How do you spell lame and full of BS...oh SHANE!!!!
