Bunch of Preference Points

Well folks, I'm not sure what to do. I got all these resident points and would love to get on an awesome mule deer hunt after waiting all these years, but haven't heard anything good lately.

Got all those elk points too. But I heard the good hunts are not what they used to be thanks to the wolves.

What would you guys put in for? I had a buddy hunt the Starkey exp last year for deer and said that it's turned into crap as well. Predators or something. I shoot the bow as well and took a 89 5/8 antelope a few years ago out of the Warner unit. Could do that again I guess. Not sure I feel it though. Would just love to get a monster buck. I don't shoot a muzzleloader but have seen some real monsters out of Frenchglen while coyote hunting. Just not sure where to go. I heard that bow hunt out of Sisters is really good. How are things in Trout Creek?

I really think I should have cashed in long ago and been able to hunt every couple years or so.

Could I possibly ask if someone with some insight would help out? Thanks

RE: Bunch of Preference Points

Oregon doesn't have an awesome mule deer hunt but you have enough points for a few units that are about as good as you're going to get. you're years away from the best elk and pronghorn hunts.

You have two options as I see it, hold out for years and hope things get better or use your points on good hunts and take someone with less points with you.

It's the 16th so I assume you know the deadline has passed.

RE: Bunch of Preference Points

I have the same dilemma that you have. I have over twenty points for deer and pronghorn and am not sure what to do. I have been trying to use the deer points, but I know that Oregon does not have any really good deer hunts. There is the Mt. Emily rut hunt, but you are still a couple of years away. For pronghorn I have enough points to get any unit. I have heard Hart Mountain is not as good as it once was. As a result I am still waiting to use those points.
I have the same number of points that you for elk. I am still a couple of years away from a good elk tag.
That is why I go out-of-state to hunt most years.

RE: Bunch of Preference Points

You could always apply for deer with a guy like me and I can help you kill a deer with our points split. With 20 points it seams like a good option in Oregon there are really no great tags but there are some really good ones with about half your points.

LAST EDITED ON May-18-16 AT 03:47AM (MST)[p]Yeah Oregon just doesn't seem to have enough trophy hunts, especially for deer. Wow 20 points...so easy to forget that is 20 years of waiting! Screw that, way too much sacrifice when Idaho is just a bit to the east. I figure a guy should cash in every couple years on decent hunts like northside, silvies, etc and just try to have an enjoyable hunt. It's just so hard to get excited about anything in Oregon now.
With saying that I put in for all 99s again. Got some plans in idaho, which seems to be becoming an annual thing for me. But next year I just might cash in... I am looking forward to being able to hunt my ol stomping grounds in south juniper, and I won't be doing that until I burn off these damn PPs. It's almost become a burden building points!

LAST EDITED ON May-19-16 AT 09:53AM (MST)[p]If you want to hunt next year..

Deer - Trout creeks, there are some good bucks in there.

Elk - Mill Creek watershed, or you are 3 years out from Walla Walla archery. Don't believe the hype, there are still some very good bulls in that country.

Warner Goats (Can you post a picture of your 89.5" archery goat?)

YOu should be able to do an either sex Muzzy tag for white tails with your 600 points..

RE: Bunch of Preference Points

WRO,
So you think Trout Creek for deer is a good tag? I had heard it had declined. I have always wanted to hunt there, but did not know enough about the area. Do you know the area very well?
I have enough points to draw the tag. I did not want to waste them.
Thanks.

RE: Bunch of Preference Points

It has decline A LOT but at least there's a chance of finding a good buck there. I've taken a couple nice bucks there , it's not great but for Oregon it's a top hunt.

My wife has 15 points and I don't want her to burn them there for whatever that's worth. but if you draw I'd be happy to tell you what I know of the unit.
