Hello, can anyone offer up any friendly last minute advice on the Susanville/Janesville area for my Bass Hill Muzzy hunt that starts next weekend? Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Well, hope for a bigger storm than what we've had so far. It rained some tonight but not enough. There are some local deer around( lots hit on the roads this year) but most of that herd is migratory.

So, what's the boundary of your hunt? Is it limited to just the Bass hill wildlife area or is it bigger?

Good morning, the Milford grade would be the southern end... and then along the ridge all the way around to about Westwood.

Girlfriend and I Had the tag last year very tough hunt. I would get the on Xmaps for phone or GPS. Verizon has great service there. Also Contact the timber company Red river Forest. Jeff is the guy that will give you permission on all there property. [email protected] . There are local deer there you best bet is stick close to private and try and catch them coming out.

Good luck..

Don't over look any areas down low in the wildlife area thinking they will only be there if they migrate,if there is bitter brush and sage and its wide open low land country there will be deer there!

LAST EDITED ON Oct-24-14 AT 02:31PM (MST)[p]+1 for Bass Hill and the low lands along the base of the escarpment. There will be plenty of good deer, with or without heavy snow and migration.

Good luck, Id stick to Bass Hill and Behind the dump! Good Luck and let us know how you did. Lots of great info provided and wed all love to see how it goes. Thanks

Some of the bucks are starting to come down. On my way to work this morning I saw one that I haven't seen all summer. With this storm predicted to come in Friday night, it might be pretty good.

I do appreciate all the info! There has been plenty of does and young bucks down low on both sides at Bass Hill.I heard they took three really nice bucks out of there during rifle season. Today was the first day that I have seen any mature bucks...so I believe the weather change is doing some good!

LAST EDITED ON Nov-08-14 AT 09:29PM (MST)[p]Hello, I just wanted to say thanks again and to follow up on the conclusion of the hunt. I saw two nice 4's on Friday which only equated to two failed stalks but Saturday was going to be a new day and the pressure was on. At around 12:00 I glassed up a solid 3 with two young bucks and a dozen or so does. By 2:30 I had put him to bed for the third time and moved in to within 65 yds and waited for him to stand up one last time. I was beginning to wonder if he was actually going to get up again but he finally did around 4:45. By the time he got to his feet I touched it off and it was all history. He never knew what hit him. Not the biggest buck in the unit but hard earned for sure with over 38 miles on my boots between hunting and scouting. I couldn't be happier with how everything worked out. Thanks again, Ryan.

good lord triple post sheesh sorry about that

Funny thing about that mountain. It's now mid-December, snow on all of the surrounding mountains so the deer have migrated. Yesterday my son and I left a rig on Byers pass and drove around by the dump. We hunted quail across there. GPS said four miles, his phone app said we covered 9.7 miles. Anyways, we saw 0 deer. I saw 0 new deer tracks since the previous rain, the day before.

That said, I have seen some dandies making this hunt in Nov/Dec.

My family took a lot of bucks off that hill starting in the 40's. It was really great habitat until the fire in the late70's early 80's. 6' tall bitterbrush over much of it. You know there's a guzzler on top off the Sunnyside Rd side. Used to be a nice covey of chukar there but I think they're long gone. I have 10 ac. on Sunnyside that the neighbors tell me the deer travel through.

ahhhhhh migration

Murp,

There are still birds up there. A couple of years ago I helped a friend scout the night before the opener. We parked at the first access on the south end of Sunnyside, went up the canyon over the top and glassed the fields below until dark. On the way up I saw the remains of a chukar (feathers and carcas) On the way back, in the dark, I walked into a roosted covey just over the top on the Sunnyside (east) side. Scared the living crap out of me but I clearly saw chukar flushing in my headlamp at about 5 feet.

I've also heard birds north of byers pass when my daughter had a deer tag a few years earlier.

Someday I'll actually hunt it for chukar, if we ever get deep enough snow again.
