What, no banter or giberish about the Goodale hunt this year? Maybe nobody drew a tag? It opened today, someone please post some pics.

One of my guys was down there last week and like usual saw tons of bucks. Antler growth was a bit better than last years pathetic growth. The best buck was a 30" forked horn with a bitchin drop tine.

Yes it is, 38 years of overshooting the best bucks on the winter range has taken it's toll. Maybe the DFW should do a study on the effects to the "gene pool" on culling the best bucks out of the herd, boy! wouldn't that be a concept.

I have to agree I have a friend with an open zone tag and have hunted most of our best hunts with him this year so I got to see them first hand and have hunted G3 myself. I used my points last year on Doyle which in my opinion is much better than G3 but still not what it used to be, like G3 if you shoot the best bucks for years the quality will surely suffer. I would like to see us develop more late hunts with less tags per hunt and maybe alternate years hunting them to give them a break.
We did see some good bucks on other units but he has yet to fill his tag and will be going to G3 but I have warned him to have a realistic about the quality, he is not opposed to letting tag go unfilled but wants to at least try.
Having been on most of our hardest to draw units G3 wouldnt even make my top five, hopefully I can take what I learned this year and use it on my wifes hunt when she draws her tag.

+1. Not even in the top 5. If you see a buck over 175 you better seriously think about squeezing the trigger.

Unbelievable. No posts or pictures? How about it Nickman any bucks up on Onion or Oak? You are in the Know. Did that wide fork with the dropper get shot?

LAST EDITED ON Dec-18-15 AT 07:41AM (MST)[p]Always wondered how the tag quota materializes. One would think it would ratchet up and down depending on the herd? In general thought 35 was too high for some time. But I wonder about the gene pool issue. Would not a buck have the same genes when 1, 2, or 8 years old. Just asking not saying the harvest is or is not effecting the future herd. Like to think it is not but if it is what in the world our we doing to ourselves and the herd! If effecting the herd stop it......is one conclusion.

And where are all the pics? yalo

I think the G3 hunt should be a rotating hunt. Every few years make it management only. 3pts on 1 side or less. What do you guys think? Would that help?

Sure they do Homer, it's just that the pretty bucks don't live long enough to reach there potential. I'm just not in favor of the late hunts, these deer have already been hunted in the general season, and they made it through. Let them have the breeding season without all the B.S. We don't have to be so greedy, you know.

Just a thought

Pretty bucks don't have to be at there 4-8 year potential to spread there genes they can do it as forked horns and 3 points genes are genes

I am confused as to why some people all of a sudden are against the Goodale hunt when recently their family member has had an opportunity to participate in this hunt. Many people have max points and are patiently waiting their opportunity for this tag. It would be unfair to those hunters with max points who are waiting their turn to eliminate the goodale hunt. I guess what I mean is that you can't have it both ways. We should be fighting for more hunting opportunities not eliminating the ones that we have.

Hi Inyo hunter, I'm not against anyone who wants to put in for the Goodale hunt, that's thier choice . All I'm saying is, I personally have been against the late rut hunts from the start, including the J-12 hunt. Yes my wife drew the tag 4 or 5 years ago, she had max points, so she put in for g-3, her choice, not mine. I haven't ever put Goodale on my tag since the start, my choice. I've had the closest of friends draw the tag, and helped them. The point of my posts, and there have been many, is if you ever saw the number, and quality, of the bucks on that winter range before the late hunts , and saw what it has become,it would make you sick. Go ahead and use your max points, thats your choice, I just think if the bucks made it through the general season, they ought to have a rest. G-3 is not a trophy hunt, it's an opportunity hunt. Yes it would be nice to have more opportunity, but the way to do that is for the DFW to go back to the North American Model of Big Game Management, and focus on the problems that are keeping the numbers at such a low level. But thats a different story, Inyo hunter I'm not against you , or any other person with max points, but I can have a different opinion, and voice it too! That's what these forums are about.

Good Hunting

I'm not in favor of eliminating the hunt, as there is a viable deer herd that mostly spend their summer range in the park......but a tag reduction (50%) is long overdue.

BOHNTR )))---------->

BOHNTR, I could go with a reduction in tags, say 15, that would be great. A local group, myself included, requested a reduction from two of the local biologists. One of them approached the regional director and was told no. The excuse being the buck to doe ratio didn't warrant a reduction. With that said, it is what it is.I don't want less hunter opportunity, not at all, if the regular X9B season was extended one week later, it might acheive the desired effects. If the herd numbers were higher we could have an increase in tag numbers, that would be even better. But I'm not going to lose sleep over g-3, like I said, it is what it is.

Thanks

I have always thought we should have more late hunts with few tags like 5-10 spread around the state and not 35 in one spot people with max points wait a long time for the tag and are more than likely looking for a buck with a large set of antlers if you keep taking the largest antlered bucks year after year it will take a toll on the gene pool with the bucks with poor genes doing most of the breeding. I think G3 is a good hunt if your looking for an easy chance at a nice four point but not if your looking for a 180" deer. I think the guys waiting as long as max points guys wait to draw this will be dissapointed with the quality, most guys I know that have drawn it are. I would not want to take the opprotunity away from the max points guys who are waiting for this tag I do think they should look at it one year prior to drawing to make sure its what they are waiting for.

First of all I would like to thank you and all your committee members for all your great work with the CDA Eastern Sierra banquet that you orchestrate every year. Obviously there are issues with most of our deer herds on the east side including (drought, road kills, predators, encroachment on the summer and winter ranges, ohv use on the winter range by guys hunting sheds)and many other issues. Its amazing we have as many deer as we do, I just believe in this day of anti-hunting politics it would be a huge mistake to eliminate any hunt. If we eliminate even one hunt it opens the doors to anti-hunting groups like the center for bio diversity to go after other hunting opportunities. They are already attempting to shut down elk hunting in Calif.

Don't want to hi-jack this thread but a quick side note. I'll bet the center for bio diversity want's to do away with elk hunting because they want them for the wolves that are coming. ( and are already here).

Hi Inyo, I understand where your coming from , and you are right. This isn't a good time to stop any hunt. The gist of my post is that my personal preference is that we shouldn't have hunts during the rut. That is all. Yes the big problem we face in the hunting community is the well funded anti machine that has their hand in the pocket of the DFW. We have to stay united to survive, and yes the CBD wants the wolves to take the excess elk. No different than the ban on Lion hunting, Bobcat trapping, and soon to be(if we dont stop it)Coyotes, put on the big game list, so they have a season and bag limit on them, and don't forget the ban on hunting bears with dogs, and how it all effects the deer herds!

Sorry for the rant

NECALI last year in Goodale I was considering shooting this dimfrautic looking 9x4 as a conversation piece for my office. We saw him a few times and never could get the deal done because it was a half-arse effort. Anyway the last time we saw him he was moving pretty slow due to a tine from a different buck that went into his front shoulder from fighting. While tracking him (blood spots) all of a sudden we ran into fresh lion tracks following the injured warrior. In this particular area I had already picked up two dead heads from the previous year so I wasn't surprised to see lion tracks. Anyway, it got dark on us and we hunted elsewhere after that hunt. Fast forward to about 3 weeks ago, one of my boys found the buck dead about a mile from where we had seen him last year. It appeared that he had been dead since last winter. If I can figure out how to post pics I'll show you pics from him being alive in the snow and what he looks like up close and personal. Or, just stop by next time your in town and I'll show you. Merry Christmas. Hope your dad is doing okay.

Sounds like a pretty cool buck. To bad the lions seem to get so many. Sounds like my Dad will have to have open heart surgery, but at least he's in pretty good shape for an 80 year old. I only hope I can get around as good as he has over the years. About ten years ago in WY. He hit a buck and took off after it. I couldn't believe he could go like he did. I could barely keep up. I'll take you up on the offer to see that buck. Next time we're down there and have a little spare time we'll swing by. And thanks for the well wishes. Merry Christmas to you and your family also.
