Hello all. I drew the Likely Tables archery antelope tag. Does anyone know if the bucks are rutting in early August. I'm hoping to be able to spot and stalk along with decoying. Thanks.

When I had the tag 2 years ago they weren't quite rutting. I think it was a little early. I did the decoy thing. It wasn?t working. They would be interested in it but no closer than 100 yards. I had a antelope and a cow. Never used the cow as I didn't hunt where the cattle were but if u do it's a good choice. My advice is get a ground blind. Find where they are watering and set up. They will come! I did spot ant stalk and got close a couple times but I'm sure u know that is a tall task but it can be done. There is also alturas ranch that u can pay a trespass fee if u want to go that route. They have a lot of goats and saw a guy kill a 84? off there! But plenty of animals on public as well! Shoot me a PM is u want any more info!

Just so everyone can read the F&G Code section;

California Code, Fish and Game Code - FGC ? 3502

It is unlawful to use any mammal (except a dog) or an imitation of a mammal as a blind in approaching or taking game birds.

It is not legal to sit water either...

I actually spoke with the GW up there at the time when I drew about the sitting water law. Not surprisingly, he knew nothing about the law but also indicated to me that he wouldn't enforce it in that situation. Like everything else in CA, the law is a joke. If you follow it to the letter, you would also be breaking the law by hunting within 200 yds of a puddle caused by rain. If you want to sit water, I'd talk to the GW up there and get some clarification from him. Not sure if the same guy is still working up there as I drew several yrs ago.

My bad. I just realized you drew archery--can't speak to that , but others have chimed in.

When my bros drew in 2002, first rifle, they were ruttin. Got see see several duking it out before we killed 2 of them. Now, I have this tag too, finally.

...only if you were hunting within 200 yards of the puddle for over 30 minutes haha!

I agree that law is a joke. Well intended but there should be a carve out for the archery antelope hunters IMO. With thst said, the law is the law and everyone should be playing under the same set of rules - not sure I would blatantly flaunt it by settng up a blind at a waterhole despite what the game warden told me verbally about enforcng it...
