NV Antelope hunting strategies

Not strategy per se but the one time I hunted them the bigger bucks were in with groups of does smaller bucks were all alone.

Drive to a vantage point, glass. Spot antelope, look over, if anything looks interesting, get closer and look again. Curse the heatwaves. Drive to the next spot. Repeat. Stay within 2 miles of water sources. In my NV experience, larger bucks are solo pre rut, move in once rut begins, 2nd week of rifle season. It's not a light switch, look at them all. Get the cape off asap, bring lots of ice. If he doesn't knock your socks off, there will be ground shrinkage. Go with your gut feeling on score...

LAST EDITED ON May-12-16 AT 09:32AM (MST)[p]I agree completely with the big bucks being solo pre-rut. They will start to guard their territory right before the rut and through it. Unlike many other big game animals many Pronghorn won't wander as much. They mark territory and wait for does to come into it and then gather them up. They will chase other bucks off, and this can be used to your advantage. When you find a buck worth a closer look you can often get them to come to you. Pronghorn can be some of the most aggressive animals we hunt. With the hilly terrain if you keep most of your body just below the skyline where the antelope cant tell what you are but can see you, and of course the wind in your favor, more often than not they will come running toward you all fired up ready to chase you off. We have harvested some nice bucks using this method. Just some food for thought.

What are the typical dates that the rut begins in Northern Nevada? Curious because I drew 041-042L this year
