I have been a long time follower on Monster Muleys. Haven't posted much but have always enjoyed reading everyone's stories. I went on a archery deer hunt in unit 072 last year and it was a blast. Saw some good bulls and decided to put in for the archery tag and drew it. I have been into the wilderness about 3 miles deer hunting. Just hoping to make the most of this awesome hunt. Would it be a good idea to backpack in and hunt a small area or would it be better to hunt near the road and cover more country? Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am planning on hunting the first 10 days of the season and I am worried if there are no elk in the area we hunted deer I don't know where else to look.I have no knowledge of this unit other then where we went deer hunting. Thank you in advance for any help.

I have helped a few guys in there archery hunting deer and elk. I would look over by Charleston over by 76 Creek seems to be overlooked during archery season quite a few bulls in there. We go into the wilderness up over by hummingbird spring and you can hike back in there to that big bowl and there's a lot of bulls in there especially when there's pressure also he can go up through draw Creek and go into the Wilderness and head over towards the fork and the Mary's River and we have caught many apples in there the issue with most of these in the wilderness is once you get a bold down getting it out the more the merrier. Good luck keep us posted.

Redman, thank you for the information and advice. I am going to do everything i can to try and get a shot opportunity on a good bull. This is a once in a lifetime hunt and i want to make the most out of it. I also drew a deer tag for the same area, but being a mule deer fanatic I am going to turn the deer tag back in. Because if i dont i will end up chasing deer and not elk. I sent you a PM with more information. I will be posting updates through out the summer.

It might be worth your time to check out Elk mountain. I had the archery tag in Idaho just across the border last year and there were several good bulls on the Nevada side of the mountain.

I did a backpack trip through the Wilderness over the 4th of July. I drew a deer tag for early October for unit 7 this year. Maybe we can exchange some info.

Keep in mind that you don't want to hunt farther from a road than you're prepared to pack out your bull.

Anybody back from hunting around the Jarbidge? Any success on archery elk? Were most of the Bulls in the wilderness or spread out into other areas as well?
I've got the muzzleloader tag that opens Friday but I'm not going to be able to get there until Sunday morning and the anticipation is killing me!

I just got back from a second trip out there scouting for my deer hunt.

I've spent most of my time within the wilderness boundary, mostly due to seeking shade since I'm backpacking. There are bulls in the steep areas above the creeks and they are bugling now.

Thanks for the reply. I'm glad to hear they are starting to get vocal. That should help to locate them and make for a fun hunt.

I shoot a bull on the second day of the archery season. took two days to pack him out. I was hunting about 5 miles into the wilderness. Saw a couple real good bulls, plenty of elk. Seemed like the pressure was pushing them into the thick & steep areas. I think if you are willing to put some miles on your boots, you will have a great hunt. Saw a few guys but most were not willing the put the work in. I hiked about 45 miles total during my hunt.

Any tips on the muzzy hunt that starts Friday?

Buddy with a tag has scouted extensively but leaving tomorrow to help him and a sighting of a great bull you couldn't get an arrow into might change our initial plans.

Shoot me a pm with your phone number.

Yeah that is the biggest one I have ever seen killed in velvet too! ... or did you just mean the biggest you saw on your hunt?
Obviously your hunt ended well but anything else you'd like to share about the hunt?

Hunted with my buddy over the weekend, outside the wilderness.

Terrible conditions! HOT, full moon, tons of traffic.

We saw a 340 type bull a long ways away. A couple of 310-320 bulls closer. Elk were bedding by 7:30.

Monday we bedded a 300 bull in a pretty easy spot to kill him. My buddy knew his son and I were leaving for work that afternoon. He was tempted since his help was leaving. He passed.

Now it's him and his 77 year old Dad.

Going back for the last 3 days of the hunt to help if he doesn't get it done by then.

I hope he gets it done soon but really looking forward to hunting the last 3 days. Should be very vocal by then.

They actually shut up although we got rain, skiff of snow and cooler weather. Called this guy up the next to last night. He never said a word but came to a cow call.

Saw this Shiras moose 15 minutes before he killed his bull.

That is awesome!! Bull moose in NV is a rare sight. Congrats to all of the successful elk hunters. I've got my fingers crossed for next year with 16 points

He passed a couple of better bulls early, couldn't get on the best couple he saw and missed a better bull but on day 15 of a 16 day season, good job.

They got quiet the last couple of days despite cooler weather. I called this guy up blindly, didn't know he was around.
