What should I do?

I killed a bull elk in october last year and had a local taxidermy guy (fairly well known) do a simple antler mount. I was told it would be done in February or March at the latest.

It is now August and while I understand that taxidermy shops are notorious for being slow/ late I would like to have it back. To add to it, I may be moving to California at the end of this month for a job and won't be close by anymore to pick it up.

Should I call and say "Can you get it done in the next two weeks?" or just tell him to give me what he has done (if anything) and I'll pay him for the work that has been done (which really can't be much, with an antler mount it is either done or not basically)?

Just give him a call and let him know what your situation is. The more you talk with your taxidermist, the higher priority your stuff is. He should be able to finish a simple antler mount in two weeks - if he decides to push it to the front. If not, I'm sure you can at least get a good idea of what to expect, or when it can be done.

+1, just talk to the guy and ask him to help you and get it done before you move.

Call him and tell him your situation. I am a taxidermist and there is no reason to wait this long for a horn mount. It takes less than a day to do one. Even if he is busy he gave you a date of completion and needs to either get it done pronto, or you get your horns and you $ back.

Just talked to him. He is going to get it done in the next two weeks for me.

He was real nice about it.

Haha, well, it is not for sure yet. The job is down to me and one other guy. The job is really good so I can't pass it up in this economy. Hopefully I'll be able to return to a free state in not too long.

Where at in California?

You may be pleasantly surprised as to what you find here and want to stay.
Some parts of this state aren't anything like what the throngs of Kali haters have conjured up in their silly little brains.

Those are some great pics HunterHarry. You are on 24hourcampfire aren't you? I recognize your boy I think from over there.

The job is in Sacramento. I know the Sierra's will be right next to me, so hopefully I can find some good fishing and hunting places like you seem to have found.

What part of the state do you live in? PM me if you would rather.

Sacramento is a big city, but if you are willing to drive a couple hours you can really have some good outdoor options.

There is good salmon & steelhead in downtown Sacramento on the American River.
The American River Parkway is pretty neat in that you feel like you are way out in the country with it's natural riverside setting.

Big fish too...

A couple hours north there are some great salmon fishing rivers too, the Feather, The Sacramento, The Yuba, The Trinity etc...

If Waterfowl is your bag, there are some National Wildlife refuges close by located in the rice belt of the Sacramento Valley with abundant waterfowl hunting opportunities.
Sacramento Refuge, Colusa Refuge, Delevan, Sutter, Gray Lodge, Grizzly Island etc...

Deer hunting is something you will have to invest some effort into.
I'm blessed to have family and friends with several thousand acres of huntable private property.

For guys than don't have those connections it means hard work, you can backpack into the wilderness areas up north, but be prepared for extremely rugged conditions, it ain't for everyone, but there are still some good blacktails there and you are still allowed 2 buck tags OTC.
Much like any other public land hunting, couple of miles will usually seperate you from the crowds.

When you get out here to Sacramento and are in need of a taxidermist, I'm your man.
See my ad in the "Find A Taxidermist". I'm about 45 min. north of Sac. (Living Trophies Taxidermy)
I did the Santa Rosa Island buck as well as a few others in this section.
Good luck in your move!!!
