An outfitter was killed in Mexico--Ronald Ryan while he was scouting ranches in Sonora. Fox news has the info, but what a tradgedy the drug cartel violence has caused and is causing. This violence is spreading to the hunting community. Sure sorry to hear this............. Allen Taylor......

All the more to stay north of the border and stand behind the AZ Gov. with her law.

I got friends that was warned about coming down there hunting quail the ranch they hunt is just a hour drive pass the border, The rancher told them it was to dangerous for them to come down this year. People was getting rob of their guns, trucks, dogs, money, and sent walking back toward the border, We knew it was just a matter of time before they kill some-one.

Enough of the violence already. Those drug cartels are ruling and people are dying. Time to send in the national guard and clean up.

Yes, time to send the national guard to the border and shoot anyone that try's to cross Illegally. The only way you deal with thugs is with thugary.

Praise to AZ for the new law and shame on OneBigAssMistakeAmerica "OBAMA" for not having their back.

LAST EDITED ON May-11-10 AT 08:15PM (MST)[p]Wow. That's sad. Anyone know him or his family?

I was reading an article a few months ago in USA Today of all places about how the violence was starting to take its toll on the guiding and outfitting industry down there. I've heard of some pretty scary deals down there the last few years. I always liked the adventure of hunting down there, but at some point it's just not worth the risk.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

I have friends that hunt Coues deer down on the Arizona border. Last year they encountered about 50 or so very tan people running across the border. It made them nervous. I can see it now. Some law abiding citizen that is hunting and has to shoot one of those dirt bags in self defense is going to end up in a lot of trouble. It is only going to escalate beyond the normal border encounters. It's really too bad. I have several hispanic friends that are true hard working law abiding CITIZENS that will feel the wrath of this too.

It's always an adventure!!!

Listen guys, I live down here in Southern Az. little town called Green Valley, 20 miles S. of Tucson. 10 years ago this area was OK and you could go out, hunt and camp without to much worry about having your stuff stolen, being robbed, beaten,or murdered. These days things are diffrent, when I go out I'm always armed and ready for the worst. I take a BIG case hardened chain and master lock . I lower my steering wheel as far as possible then wrap the chain around it as many times as I think are needed then around the brake pedal. I dont leave any thing in the truck that I want to keep and I never leave anything in the truck with my name or any personnel info on it. I leave water in the back of the truck so the illegals can get a drink hoping that will discourage them from breaking my windows to get inside. I do my hunting and hope for the best. Two diffrent times before getting all the way back to camp I have seen illegals near my truck, once two men were sitting on the tailgate drinking water and once a single man was sitting on the ground 5 ft. from my truck. Both times I called BP found a high spot so I could watch these guys from a distance and waited for BP. Both times BP came to the rescue and took these guys into custody. I never go out any more without seeing at least one guy and I have seen as many as 17. So far I have had no face to face conflicts with these guys. No conflicts meaning I have'nt had to shoot any of them yet. But I think thats just a matter of time.

My condolenses to the family of the outfitter that was killed.

And BUCK OFAMA !!!

To all the non-AZ people, just imagine having 1/3 of your state off limits to hunting because of illegals and drug-runners. Look at a map...find Casa Grande (S of PHX).....and anywhere south of that you're taking a HUGE RISK WITH YOUR LIFE to hunt. I've run into them that far north as well as in the very remote desert...so it doesn't have to be just near the border or big cities.

My condolences to the outfitter.

I guess I would take exception to your statement regarding "HUGE RISK TO YOUR LIFE.....". Quite an ignorant & extreme statement, don't you think??? ;) How many hunters have been killed by bandits in So. AZ in the past 5 years?? Yes, it has happend, but rarely. Risk? Yes. HUGE risk?? Hardly, IMO.

I hunt south of Casa Grande quite often. I take my kids there to hunt to. Am I aware of what goes on and do I take some precautions? OF COURSE, but am I taking a huge risk?

That being said, this thread is about a death that happened in Mexico not AZ, so back to the thread. Here is an article posted today on azcentral.com. It describes a bit more than some of the earlier reports. Sad.....

http://www.azcentral.com/community/.../12/20100512man-killed-in-mexico-mourned.html

Obviously, everyone should take note if planning on hunting in Mexico.

:-(

That is very sad and completely unnecessary. I am American born with Hispanic background. I am not sure I agree with the AZ law. What I do agree with is fortifying the border by any means. If you are caught drug trafficking then you should be shot on site. If you are an illegal immigrant then you should be deported immediately. Send a strong message. If the cartels want war well they have f...ed with the right country.

Agreed Stanley on getting back to the point of the poor guy in Mexico. Sorry for bringing it north a bit.

Nope, I don't think it's an extreme or ignorant statement. You might have better experiences than me; but I'm not taking the chance....I've seen plenty of them, talked with ranchers, and wardens, and have heard stories that you might not have.
You admitted yourself that it's a risk...whether it's a huge risk is relative. But my point is you shouldn't have to take that risk when going hunting in your own state...in Mexico...maybe...

but I digress....back to the topic at hand in Mexico and that poor outfitter. Bad things happen to good people...

What a shame. I saw a posting in the MM classifieds from a muley outfitter down there. Sounded like a dream job for a youngster looking for an adventure. January deer seasons, monster bucks, decent wages and good tips. THEN you realize you'd be a prized trophy yourself for some of the drug runners. Scary deal. Sad to see good citizens get caught up in the mix.

For sure a risk north of the border also BGbasbhat, just an opinion I suppose regarding how extreme it is.... I hear stories to, but as far as confirmed deaths of 'civilians' here in AZ, it seems pretty low (Of course, NOT to forget the recent sad demise of Mr. Krentz! :-( )

This situation in Mexico definitely makes me consider seriously whether I would travel south of the border or not. I actually know this guy's partner a bit (Bart..... I actually know his father better then him....), and had talked to him briefly about hunting with them some day. $$ has prevented me from going south of the border til now, and based on this latest incident, I don't know if I'll be going anytime soon, or ever..... Can't really see the situation down there improving much anytime soon. x(

Theres nothing in Mexico that you cant find right here in the good ole USA, do your hunting here, take your vacations here and stay alive here. I have'nnt been there since 911. I figure whats the point just wait and Mexico will come to us. Its happening every day

Buck Ofama !

Not to down play what's going on in Mexico or the border, but it's not all that safe hunting on National Forest land in California any more. Big pot gardens and drug labs manned and guarded by illegals is a huge problem. I used to think about a bear or maybe a mountain lion, but those are the least of my worries now.

Yes! Words of wisdom, I believe......

I was watching a show on the outdoor channel the other day, I cant remember exactly what show, but they were hunting coues deer in az and filmed a group of illegals with big backpacks walking through the area.

You might want to ask the deputy that got shot outside of Casa Grande last week what he thinks. My condolences and prayers go out to Mr Ryan and his family...... Terry

Wow! I'm sad to hear this. I hunted with Ronnie Ryan and Bart Hill a few months ago. We had a blast and Ronnie took good care of us crossing the border and again crossing on the way out of MX. He was a very happy sort of guy, and had a great sense of humor, always laughing and joking around.
I've got a sick feeling in my gut right now after learning what happened to him.

What a sad thing not only for the familly but for the whole situation! Send in the guard & we might have a bunch of dead heroes! IMHO this is a special ops mission, surgical strikes for the leaders & their companions. But also Mexico needs to step up to the plate & clean up their own mess!!

Here in Southern Utah for the past several years, big pot growing areas have been found on National Forest areas on the Boulder Mtns,Fislake Mtns,Panguitch Mts,West Deserts and others.Seems like more and more areas and being used for the growing of pot.I think it is a major problem for more and more areas each year.My condolences go out for the guides family and friends.(ROD)

A real tradgity for Ronnies family.

I use to day dream about hunting Sonora.Consequently, it has lost it's appeal to me over the last few years with it's decline in BIG bucks and it's rise in drug related murders.

Mike

Fellow hunters, I would like to thank you for your thoughts regarding Ron's family. To clear up some items regarding Ron?s death. Ron was traveling from one city in Mexico to the city of Nogales Mexico. He was not scouting or hunting. However this does show what dangers you might face when you do not use good solid common since. Please consider some of the mistakes Ron made that led to this outcome;
1. Ron?s truck was a 2009 Dodge 4 x 4 loaded with the features all of us would desire.
2. Traveling alone
3. Traveling during the night, yes it was early morning for us but for people partying their life away, this is their happy hour.
4. Ron stopped in a township for gas at 4:30am. This is where Ron?s problems started. Lack of planning or just plain complacency on Ron?s part.
I feel Ron should have used the same procedures our business uses when representing our clients in Mexico, if so, I believe he would still be here with us today.
Please don't hold this against the Mexican people. As with any populist, you have a mixer of both good and bad people.
Warm regards,
Bart

Not to diminish the death of this man or his obvious love for Mexico and its people. I sincerly feel for his family and friends. He was just doing what he loved and desired to do.

I've been to Mexico many, many times mostly to fish in the Rio Grande for some of the biggest Channel Cat and Aligator Gar I've ever seen any where. So I understand the attraction for going there. But that was years ago when it was safe and (well Safer) and drug cartels werent in charge.

Not trying to be a smart a++ or anything but I have just one question and it is

What does Mexico have that any American Citizen could possible want bad enough to go to Mexico to get it when I know that what ever it might be you can get it right here in America.

I go to hunt coues and mule deer in Jan. with a rifle. Two each if I can afford it, plus the people we stay with are the greatest. Everytime but once I have seen muleys over 30" and coues over 100".

Cabuck

I go because it's an experience you can't duplicate here in the states.

Big rutting muleys during January when the weather is freezing cold here, and 75 degrees and sunny there. The food is awesome, and the culture is my favorite thing. I've spent several years in south america and Mexico and I really like being there. Most of the people are very nice and very likeable.

Sure, I can kill a big buck in Colorado, or Nevada, or Wyoming, or Utah.......But I can't experience the same thing. It's not just the big bucks. It's the whole deal from start to finish. For me it's way more of an adventure to pack up and head south of the border than it is to head to the mountains. I love both, and would hate to have to quit going to either place.

I've taken the time to learn the language and can really enjoy myself and the people. I especially like seeing the vaqueros doing their jobs on the ranches. These guys are living like a lot of the cowboys here did back in the early 1900's.

I am swamped at my taxidermy shop all during the fall and it's nearly impossible to leave to do a hunt. In January it's a different story. I can leave for a couple of weeks and I don't miss dozens of animals and leave a mess for the others at the shop. It's just a great time for me to be hunting!

That being said, I am very disappointed that the state of Sonora is getting worse and worse as far as safety goes. I've always thought that I could mind my business and stay safe. Now with a man I knew personally, and just hunted with in January being murdered, it takes on a whole new light for me.

Anyway, it's hard to say you can get the same thing in Colorado or any other state, because it's so much more than just the deer.

DeerBeDead

DeerBeDead, Sorry to hear about your hunting acquaintance. I grew up on the border and have also hunted and fished in Mex.

I speak spanish and really used to spend alot of time across the border. Most of the people are great. I feel realy bad for what they are going thru. Love the the laid back atmosphere.

I gave up on Mex. several years ago. I know three people in three different circumstances that got robbed down there and all made it back across the border with nothing but the cloths on there backs. Lost there vehicles and everything.

Until the cartels are stopped, its only going to get worse. Guess what, our government could care less. I cant think of a buck that would score big enough to go to Mexico to hunt. The whole country is corrupt. How often in the states can you buy your way out of a ticket? The Mexican police pull Americans over for nothing to collect because they know they will pay. I know from experiance.
All you guys who hunt down there, I wish you the best of luck and a safe return home. For me, not a chance.
Americans are an easy target for these thugs. Please be carefull, and good luck.

Have they caught the guy or guys who did it.
