OnX phone app

LAST EDITED ON Nov-28-17 AT 10:51AM (MST)[p]I use it. I think it works great. You have to download a map for use in offline mode but it's easy. I used the heck out of it for my 3rd season buck hunt.

I have the app and the chips. Love both of them. But I've found myself using the phone app way more this year. If you hunt multiple states, this app is a must. If you hunt close to either private land boarders, unit boarders or state line boarders, it's also money!

They work as advertised. This year I used all three; the gps chip, the app on an android phone, and the app on an iphone.

I use both GPS and Iphone on X app... I like the phone app maybe a little better easier to see detail on the phone. Just make sure you down load your hunt area before going hunting. I didnt take my GPS the last hunt of the year cause I wasnt using it at all used only my phone.. If I recall right it even works in airplane mode so not to suck to much battery someone might comment and confirm that I dont recall

I used it in Colorado for my hunt. I had to download the maps before I left, due to lack of cell service. I had to put my phone on airplane mode, because there was just enough cell service that it would try to pull it up online, but it couldn't. I would switch it over to airplane mode and my downloaded maps popped right up, and it still would tell me my current location. I see no need for me personally to get a GPS unit now. Nice to know exactly where you are at comparing public to private.

I have the chips and the app. The app on the smart phone is wayyy better!!! Easier to use more versatile, and ton of more options.

Last week on a hunt my Friend had the phone version but he did not download the maps for all the areas we hunted so it did not work in the area we were hunting as we were just off the boundary of his map.
We used my GPS which also has the OnX Idaho chip and boom now we had maps for everywhere in the unit.

From that little bit of experience with both I'll stick to the GPS.

I use it and love it. Everything these guys are saying is accurate. Downloading the maps ahead of time is a must.

For boundaries, locations, way points, it's awesome. The one thing I don't think works well is the altitude and distance tracking, but I'm not sure if that's a phone or app issue.

The tracking worked great, I always knew where I was at and where I had been. The distance traveled always seemed off and the altitude change had trouble registering. The positive aspects really outweigh those issues though.

I use both and like them. I probably prefer the chip because I don't have to worry about downloading or phone service.

I will always have both when going on any hunt.

I used Onx extensively on a phone that is incapable of using cell service. All you need is an account at the android/iPhone app store so you can install the app and wifi so you can download the offline maps. You could even do that at mcdonalds or starbucks.

Bought the package this year, downloaded the app on my cell phone which has a large screen. Used the software on my computer and downloaded several areas to my phone. Put the phone on airplane mode while hunting to save the battery. Product worked fantastic. I only used my GPS unit to mark my truck location, never touched it after that. Just used the phone and knew exactly where I was at and where I was going. Found property markers within a few feet and found a few fenced areas that where actually public land. I live in Colorado and will never hunt without this product again.

I looked in the App store, and before I buy, I have some questions you guys can probably help with.

1) What does the $30 annual fee provide?
2) Does it use cell service in areas that have cell service?
3) Can it be used in states not listed? (such as Nebraska, Iowa, etc...) Does that require cell service?
4) Suppose I'm in Colorado, with no cell service, and I purchased the map. Does it allow me to see where I am? Does it use satellites with my phone?

Maybe I'm just asking too many questions and should just buy it and see how it works on my Nebraska turkey trip this spring!

Finally, I see it is age rated for 4 and above. Is there a version for old farts adverse to technology? :D :D

$29.99 is for ONE state

you cannot add another state for another $29.99

$99.99 is for all states they cover, and the only way to bump up from a single state.

If you upgrade from the same source you used to purchase the single state, it will pro rate the single state cost and deduct the remainder from the $99.99 fee.

The "nationwide" layers will show for all states even though you only purchased one state.

You can "add" other states, up to 5 total, even though you only purchased one. Adding those states will enable the game unit boundaries. You will then have 4 addl states with sat/topo/hybrid layers, roads, and national layers, available for Internet Scouting on the OnX webmap. You can download the sat/topo for offline use, and the tracking feature will work in those addl states.

You cannot download the addl "paid for" content (BLM/travel mgmt. areas/Migration/etc) for those addl states.

Thanks WB!

I think I'll try the $29 for Nebraska this spring and see how I like it. If I need other states, I'll upgrade to the $99 option.

I really like this phone app. I used it in Utah then went to Colorado for our mule deer hunt.

I called the OnX people and bought the full 50 states option for $50 in October.

Try calling them before just adding it from iTunes, you may get a better deal.

I also have a GPS unit but this made it extremely easy and works great.

I have it on my phone but i guess i was too dumb to figure out how to download onto my phone. Only utilized it when i had coverage. How do you download?

I don't have this app but interested. Someone said the free app doesn't indicate land ownership. Does this just mean it doesn't give landowner names, or it doesn't even show if you're on public vs. private land? I need to know if I'm on BLM or on somebody's ranch, but don't necessarily need to know the name of the ranch owner; will the free app work for me or do I need the $30 one to tell if I'm on public or trespassing?

This is a great tool for hunting - just make sure you down load the maps of the area you want to hunt in case you don't have service.
But remember this is not exact, it gives you a good idea of where you are.
We were on private property Deer hunting and a guy rolled on up, we asked him if he knew where he was and he said sure I do.
After he looked at the map again with our help, he could see he was trespassing.

I have a GPS unit and don't take it anymore, this works great.

Good Luck!

Still wondering if you need the $30 app, or if the free one is ok, to tell you if you're on private land or BLM. Also, I'm specifically interested in WY and it appears that WGFD has an app that might be sufficient as well?
