Does the DWR verify

LAST EDITED ON Feb-26-18 AT 04:08PM (MST)[p]With the yearly big game draw nearly coming to an end, I have wondered if the DWR spends the time to verify the thousands of applications that Check the box on your application stating that you are not a criminal (felon) and can legally obtain a firearm to hunt?
Or do they take your word?

Being a CFP holder, I'm asking out of curiosity.

Seems like one of those add on type things. In that if you get whacked, they can add on charges. I can't imagine they check it.

I thought that was the reason it took so long to release Expo results... to verify all winners were legal. Is that not true?

All they have to do is run a match of #s thru NCIC for history, wants, and warrants. The computers could do it in nano seconds.

Toooo funny!

You crack me up Hossblur and Grizzly!!

Prohibited persons can and do draw any weapon tags. If they use a rifle...they can be prosecuted. They can use certain types of muzzleloaders and archery equipment. Some states are more restrictive about the weapons a prohibited person can possess.

Colorado is strict. You can't use any kind of weapon if you're a felon. You can't even carry a knife if the blade is too long.

The DWR does not check this, to my knowledge. Remember, the DWR does not even conduct the draw. A private 3rd party company in Nevada does.

They could, in theory, check everyone before certifying them for the draw. But I doubt that happens, and I don't think they need to take the resources to do so. I'd rather have the certification we each do for our permits become something we could be prosecuted for perjury if we lie than put the burden on the DWR to weed out the liars.

A restricted person in Utah would also be prohibited by law from packing a Swiss Army knife. It is just never prosecuted.

Nobody says you have to use a weapon to hunt. If you can run down a deer and choke it to death. To can hunt as a felon.

FROM DWR ;

"The purchase or possession of any hunting license, permit, tag or certificate of registration from the Division does not authorize the holder to legally possess or use a firearm, muzzleloader, archery tackle or any other dangerous weapon while hunting if they are otherwise restricted from possessing these weapons under Utah Code ? 76-10-503."

DWR in no way discourages a felon from buying a lic. they just give notice that you might get in trouble if you use it.
