Best value Buffalo

I want to eat a buffalo.

I have no problem with killing and processing it myself.

I don't care if it is a grocery run, and it comes from a pasture.

Where can a guy find the best value for an eating buff?

I've heard of places in Montana for around $1,000 but I don't have any info and I'm not sure if that's the best price or not.

Ranch in Peoa, Utah. About 7 years ago I got a 1 1/2 year old for around $1000. You shoot it, they gut it and drop in your pickup or trailer. We butchered it ourselves. Hi Mountain Bison Hunts. 801-663-7026.

We paid for a cow bison and a 3 1/2 year old bull from a guy in Oak city Utah.Different years. Not sure if he is still doing it or not. Maybe Bob and chime in if not we can look it up. He helped us save the rug and had a Taxidermist there to take it for us. Also called the butcher and we dropped off the animal in Fillmore. It was I think more healthy then beef. He also had a ranch he would drop it off and you could have a mini hunt. We where just looking for the meat. Although the bull we got came from the Antelope island auction. He feeds them for a while until someone want to buy one when the time is right. It is pretty good meat. Good luck.

That would be Lambert Dutson in Oak City. A good guy but he is out of the bison biz. Funny thing is I came up here with a buddy who shot one a couple years before we moved here (wasn't my plan to move here, it was the dang wife's idea and I'm still trying to get out). We did shoot a couple of his bison with my 50bmg, that was fun.

Thank Bob for the info.

For best value on a buffalo hunt, you are a few years late. I have taken 4 buffalo. In S. Dakota, Wyoming on the Ted Turner ranch, California, and Oregon. At that time prices were down and to shoot a 2-3 year cow or bull was around 1300 to 1500. I took a massive 2000 pound bull in South Dakota and the cost was only 1900 and that included a two night stay on the rancher's cabin overlooking the Platte river. That also included delivery to the meat processer.

Today you can expect to pay around $3,000.00 for a 2-3 year old meat cow and a bull is a heck of a lot more. Since you want a good meat animal, you do not want any cow or bull that is over 3 years old in order to get the best meat that is tender.

Use your google search and check different sites for your hunt and prices and pick the one that looks best for your wants. Good luck.

Thanks for the info. Its appreciated.

Is there a Platte River in SD I don't know about, or just a typo?

Try the Twin Pines Ranch in Eastern Wyoming. Their Bull hunts are expensive, but I think their cow hunts are reasonable.

No, not a typo, just a short memory. The ranch we hunted was the "Two Heart buffalo ranch" just below Sioux City. I think the river was the Vermillion river that bordered the East side of the ranch. He is no longer in business and sold his entire buffalo herd to a ranch located in Nebraska. His operation was the best by far of the 4 places I hunted.

Crow Rez has some good hunts.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-29-18 AT 01:19PM (MST)[p]Yes the Crow has good, wild, free-range hunts, but the prices have come in line with what Wyoming charges for NR tags and then way less overall when you add an outfitter. Plus our hunts have been 100% can't say the same for Wyoming or Montana bison hunts. I sell all the bison hunts up there and the majority of bison hunters I book need it to be free-range bison and in that case its a bargain because we normally get you up there in 1-3 years instead of waiting 20-30 years to draw a tag. Guess I'm saying not a hunt priced just for a meat run...used to be just not anymore.

I've got some in northwest South Dakota. 20,000 acre ranch that is low fenced. Around 500 mama cows and close to 100 bulls of various ages. Two-day hunts with your guides lodging and meals provided. We take them to the processor and taxidermist if you wish as well. Prices just very on availability and age/sex. I'm not on here every day but will check in periodically if anybody has any questions.

I'd love to hear the cost of each classification of animal. Young bull, cow, big bull, etc.

PM me if you'd rather.

I'll give you a free ride anywhere you want to go if it bothers you that bad. Where are you from?

Are there any fat young cows at $1000, to $1500 out there?

Is that unreasonable? I don't know - its an honest question.

A person can google forever and not find a decent answer.

I suppose I'll have to start stopping and asking questions every time I drive by a herd.

But we're off to a good start with this thread. Anyone with info keep it coming.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-03-18 AT 11:49AM (MST)[p]Hi Mountain Bison,UTAH- $2900-3500 for cows. $2500-2900 for yearlings. That's double what I paid about 8 years ago.

If all you are looking for is meet you might want to look for Buffalo meat already processed it would probably be the cheapest way.

If your looking for the best value for "water buffalo" then I've heard that just south of Moab, Utah isn't too bad...

I will take you up on that ride, central Montana is my planned destination. As soon as my daughter is out of High School (a year and a half) and before my boys start, is the plan.

Now that's funny!

Holiday Bump

My local buffalo rancher sells boxed quarters, halves, and whole processed buffs.

340lbs boxed is about $3500
