Well, I've been lurking on this site for a while and Founder's request for particpation in this challenge pushed me to jump in the pool. I have no intentions of winning the contest as the competition is already way over my head. I'm not sure if anyone will find this interesting but maybe it will help motivate someone to make a trip out of their local hunting area and comfort zone. I'll try to share some of the planning from the logistics, gear, fitness and hunting standpoints and I hope it makes for good reading.

I have been in the Western States tag application game for about 9 years and I really enjoy it. I've drawn a few tags and been on several guided hunts (draw and OTC) which were mostly "successful". I've also done one DIY solo wilderness archery elk hunt where I had a great adventure but didn't get a shot opportunity. This year, I have drawn a pretty good late season rifle Mule Deer hunt and I really struggled with the decision to go guided or DIY. I ended up chosing DIY for both hunt satisfaction and financial reasons. The quality of the tag and the complications of late season weather made the decision tougher but I really want to try it myself.

Obviously, I'm well into the planning stages and I've made some really good progress which I'll describe in my future posts. I won't have many pictures or videos until I return from the hunt so this thread just might win the fastest loading contest. I won't get back home until after Thanksgiving and it might take me a little while to get the hunt journal posted. That's a busy time of year.

I could really use a spell checker!

Good luck on you hunts!
