"Perspective"

So you on a General season hunt, and find these two bucks. Which one would you shoot, and what would be the deciding factor? Do you like width over height, mass, fork depth. Why would you choose the buck you choose?

A little more info. The buck on the left is a 7x9 with matching droptines. The buck on the right is a 7x6 with one droptine.

I would pass on both if you were guiding me because I know you'd have a bigger buck you knew about somewhere. If by myself I would take the buck on the left I like his look and he's an older buck.

Two great bucks with character! Given the choice, And if the two were standing together, I would be after the one on the left.

Given the choice I'd take one on the left. He has more mass and for my tastes a better look. But you said on a general season hunt so I'd shoot either of those on the first chance I could. There would be no regrets even if I saw the other buck a hour later.

I would shoot the one on the left because it is probably his last year before he starts to regress.

I would pass on the one on the right because in another 3 years he could look like the one on the left.

Right answer?

The buck on the left for me for sure. He looks like the bigger buck for sure and that's what I like! Yep, easy choice for me.
The buck on the right looks to have better tine length, but left buck is more impressive.

Thanks for sharing the pics. I like these types of threads.

Always pick the ugly girl bobcat, she'll try harder! Yelum knowing what I know of you , you probably know the score of these two bucks, either exactly, or a better idea than most of us. I'm a left buck guy too, but what do they score?

I saw these bucks multiple times, 4 years apart. And like all of you, except the smart one, I was most impressed by the left buck.

That is until I held the sheds.

Here is a pic of the left bucks sheds. They score around 208.

Like everyone else, I would shoot the buck on the left because of his mass and width and character.

The buck on the right sure has some big forks though and as we might be finding out soon scores really well!

I don't think you are wrong for shooting a lower scoring deer if it looks bigger...B&C is totally weighted towards tine length and most of the time a buck with 45" of mass and shorter tines will look bigger than a buck with 35" of mass and big deep forks.

The heavier buck only gets 10" of extra credit for his mass, but if the deeper fork buck has the same size main beams and inside spread, but 2" of extra length on the G2, G3 and G4, it ends up bigger by 2". Just comparing pictures of the two, most would say shoot the heavier buck because he looks way bigger. If he has 4" of extra length on each of the 3 tines on both sides then he ends up scoring 14" more than the heavier buck, could be the difference between a Boone and Crockett buck and big heavy bad boy non-B&C buck.

I'd be absolutely elated with either, on any unit in the west. I don't need to be on a general season hunt to know I'd shoot both those bucks without hesitation. Whichever one presented a shot I felt good about first...that's the one I'd shoot.

I would choose the buck on the right. I like his look better. I love a big typical frame and the right buck has it. The buck on the right also appears to have excellent mass to go along with his tall frame. Tall, heavy, big typical frame...I'll take it.

I didn't have my big typical framed shed with me when I saw the above set, but I did get a picture of my shed with the same bucks set from the next year, which actually scored about the same as the previous year. As you can see, the right buck would have dwarfed the buck most of you thought was heavier. The single scored 103, with its match scoring a couple inches bigger, putting the right buck at about 229.

This is a good example of how difficult it can be to judge deer by a picture. Both these bucks were over 7 years old when those pics were taken. When the right buck was by other bucks, his body dwarfed them, making his antlers look small.
