"Henry Mtns...Would You?"

Just curious how many of you would pass this buck on a LE Archery Hunt? What's your guess on rough score?

We have seen this buck twice.

He moved 9 miles in one week. He is a cool buck but not a shooter for me.

I love his big eye guards and all of the crowning at the bases.

I was guessing high 180's or a tick better.

170 to 180ish frame with 10 inches of trash on it's bases a tough call.

Not a shooter on the Henry's for me. I'll never draw that unit anyways but with the bucks I have seen on that unit, I would have to pass unless it was coming down to the last few days of my hunt, my hitlist had been harvested by other hunters, or I had no better options available. I would agree with the 170-180 estimate.

I would guess that buck grosses right around 190". It would be tought to pass . . . unless you are hunting the Henry Mountains.

Not in the Henrys. Once in a lifetime hunt. Not a once in a lifetime buck. But I would shoot the Holy Cross wilderness buck on that hunt

I think he will go right around that 190" mark. I would have a very hard time passing him up on the archery hunt. I know it's "The Henry Mtns" but that doesn't make things easier for an archery hunter. It's still hard to get in close on a giant buck. I think with a muzzy and rifle, you can afford to be very picky. For a guy like myself that has zero big bucks on the wall, that buck would get an arrow in him on the Henrys. Stud buck, and I would be very happy with him.

Sorry, I am not much into scoring, but I have trouble getting 190 out of this buck even with the trash. Beautiful buck, but forks are too shallow.

Having been there before and having seen the bucks... With an archery tag I'd be taking this guy. He's closer to 190" than 180" I think

I don't see anyway that buck doesn't make 190". He's got 20"+ of browtines and extras around his bases on a frame that I think is well over 170". Henry mountain deer, like northern Arizona deer, have a tendency to be sneaky big.

11 inches of NT points

186 gross my guess. If you like him shoot, unless you have seen much better. Good luck. Please post pictures.

Totally depends on how the hunt is going and how much fun I'm having. If this hunt is kicking my butt and I'm not getting better chances, then possibly on one of the last 2-3 days. A Henrys tag is basically the same concept as your honeymoon….make it last as long as possible.

Okay, I gotta post again. I also think at his widest spread up top he's 30" wide. I think you have a 30 inch, 175" main frame with 15" of extras... That, to me, is a buck worthy of a Henry's tag...

A good friend of mine killed a 186" buck that had 12" of total extras off the Henry's with a Muzzy... When you see it on his wall, there is no way you could pass it.

I think you'll regret passing this buck. Very few people actually kill those 220" bucks on the Henry's with their bows... It's steep, hard country to hunt with a bow.

180-185 on his frame, with 9-10 inches of extras on his bases. That said unless it was coming to the end of the hunt, I think I would pass.

I also think he will go mid 180's on his main frame. Nontypical inches on this buck are hard to judge because several of the points appear really close to 1" so they may or may not count. Nontypical score is probably over 190", but nontypical score could be mid 190's if all those points are scoreable. If he was standing next to a 160 class buck the difference would be obvious. His right G3 flares out so he is also wider than he first appears. I think he is close to 30" outside spread.
A 190"+ buck that is close to 30" wide, would be hard to pass on. I wouldn't have a problem passing on him if I had seen several larger bucks while scouting.

I had the Henry’s archery tag this years and I did pass him up. I saw him on Ellen and picked him up when he moved to the horn , I could have killed him three times and passed. With the caliber of bucks on killed on the Henry’s with bows this year he would’ve been a last day driving home buck. That being said I loved glassing him and hope he was everything that the lucky hunter wanted.

IMO he's a shooter with any weapon. The character, height, width and level of maturity leads to this conclusion. I'm a firm believer in the adage " the trophy is in the eye of the beholder ". Rough score I'd say 185ish.

I've never been one to care much about score. I like him; he's got lots of character. I've never been to the Henry Mtns, so I can't predict my behavior. But if I saw one close to him in archery season tomorrow, I'd sure stick him if I could.

I'd probably shoot him if he's still in the velvet, but might let him walk if he's hard horned.

My rule when bow hunting is never pass on the first day what you would shoot on the last day. Bowhunting is tough by nature. I would shoot that buck on day one with a Henry's tag. I know of several guided rifle hunters from years past that have shot bucks similar or smaller.

My rule of hunting unless I have limited time is: I wait all year for this hunt and unless it is something spectacular or I have other hunts waiting, don't end it quickly. The actual time afield is the best part of the hunt.

I get a kick out of the "maybe toward the end of the hunt" type responses. If that buck presents you with a good shot, ask yourself how many chances will you have later on, at something better, to justify passing this one? And I think he'll go just north of 190. Not a bad archery buck on any unit.

On the Henry's there will be multiple opportunities of that caliber and potentially much larger.

Unless you are buying tags, you will be lucky to hunt this once in a lifetime. So yeah, not even on the first week.

In velvet.. 30 inches wides scoring mid 180's or 190's. I say let the arrow fly.. Most hunters never see a buck that big in archery range.

Using an arrow for that buck on the henry mountains would be so stupid. everyone should know there are 210 inch bucks that are just waiting to be shot. shooting a 190 buck that is 28 inches wide with a bow would be such a waste of the tag. Be ready to be ridiculed and laughed at if you do shoot it. You should at least find a 194 incher.

This is one of those bucks that won't score very well but will look good on any wall. I have never passed on a buck that large, but I never held a Henry's tag, either. It would simply depend on whether or not I had a better buck lined up elsewhere. If not, then I would be very happy with him.

Nice buck, he's got a cool look to him. It all depends on the hunter and what he or she is after. Some guys would die for a buck like that others would choose to take the opportunity to chase a 200+. Some guys shoot 160" bucks on the Book Cliffs and are elated and others complain that's all they can find and others scout and stick it out for 180 plus. It is all a personal decision. If I was archery hunting the Henry's I'd definitely be looking for a bigger buck to pattern and chase. If I ended up with that buck I'd be happy and love looking at him on the wall. Who gives a shiiit what other people think. If you're looking for recognition from others as your drive to hunt then your hunting for a different reason than me!

Its whatever you set yer standards to. Year before last in region G, I had my sights set on a 190 or better buck until the last two days of my hunt. Passed on a mid 180's buck the first morning and ended up with a 172 buck on the last day. Did the same last year and passed on several in the high 170's/low 180's. Towards the end of the hunt there was a significant snowstorm and I ended up shooting an exceptional buck.

If yer goal in the Henry's is a 200 class buck, pass. Otherwise I think he'd look great on the wall...

If it was my tag and I was given an ethical shot, it would be a no brainer - arrow would be in flight.

Quick look and I'd say he's in that 190 range. Huge eyeguards and all the stuff on the bases add a lot.
Not sure he's one to be looking for. I haven't been down there, so I don't know what else is running around. However, it's hard to get big bucks with a bow, so if he offered a great shot, it might be foolish to not take it.

So many people who are full of it on this forum.

Put people in the actual situation, this buck standing still at 20 yards and I'd bet 99/100 would let it fly.

But alas, here we are behind computers pondering the what ifs. Just remember, "If if was a fifth, we'd all be drunk".

doz,
Have you spent time on the Henrys? I am just curious to know if you actually know the unit and the type of deer on the unit. I for a fact know that 99 out of 100 people that have spent time on the unit would not let an arrow fly. So I am curious, how much time have you spent on the unit? How many mule deer have you harvested? How many with a bow? Or are you basing your comments off of your interweb knowledge?

Not a shooter for me
I have taken many bucks of that caliber and some much larger and have plenty of them mounted already I really don't need another one or want to kill the smaller buck. I'm also sitting on 20 points to draw that Henry's and if I do I certainly wouldn't waste it on a buck like that. Besides all those extra points around the bases they add to the score but really don't do anything for his overall quality and size.
Good post and nice pics though. Good work.

If you pass on him with a bow you might eat tag soup

LAST EDITED ON Sep-07-17 AT 08:03 AM (MST)

Tag soup isn't the end of the world for a trophy Hunter especially on hunting Henry's. I hunted Arizona's 13 B last year and came home with tags soup and I'm still alive The wannabe big buck Hunters don't understand but the true trophy hunters do.

I have spent very little time on the Henry's, I have killed big bucks, I have miss big bucks, I have passed on big bucks.

With all that being said, I cannot say either way what would happen until I was put in that situation. Multiple factors would play into my decision, (i.e. How far into the hunt, previous scouting, etc.) I consider myself a trophy hunter, I have eaten many tags, and without a doubt many things would sway my opinion. I don't only look at the animal, most times the trophy is in the memories.

I can promise you, that if my son or daughter were with me, and that buck was in range and they wanted me to shoot it...... an arrow would be flying his direction.

I absolutely did mean that in a positive way DGB, I've read your posts and their always constructive. I was referring to the last sentence of the post just above yours. It tells a lot.

I would have to shoot because it would be my biggest typical mule deer buck. But then again, I live in Texas.

Archery? No brainer for me. Probably kill him with a rifle, too.

Nice buck I would probably shoot with a Muzzleloader! I bet he scores 201" with about 14" of extras around the base...

Great pics HJB, What else did you see? I think that buck is awesome, but I think he is young and in 2 more years he would have been REALLY AWESOME. I am pretty sure I saw him last year when I was there.(I have film)I guessed him a 2 year old last year. He put on a lot of inches. That's what young bucks do. Hunters are their own worst enemy. I am glad only a few are allowed to hunt it. Reading some of these posts the Henry's would be wiped out again in 1 year. If it were opened back up. Hunters have no one to blame but themselves for Draws & Limited Entry and the over all piss poor hunting in general season areas. Get em while you can I suppose.
