NM unit 17 youth deer

My 10 year old has drawn the youth hunt in unit 17. He's going for his first big game animal. We've made a scouting trip but still trying to figure out the unit. Can anyone help give me some info to understand where the deer may be in late November (type of habitat or elevations) or point me to what part of the unit to concentrate in? I have found it to be a pretty large unit with a big mountain range. We only have a few days to hunt so I am hoping we don't spend all our time just trying to figure out where the deer live. I went just south of Socorro, east side of a mountain range. There was more private there than I expected and it was pretty open country. I didn't find much country to hunt nor water sources. We'll go before the hunt and try the other side of the unit, but that range looked pretty rough to get around.
