Yep. Two-day guide service gets you into the outfitter allocation, but that's all its really worth. Increases your odds in most NM units. Never done it, but friends who have competed with full-paying guided clients, but still managed to kill elk.

If you archery guys really think the LE early rifle week is when you want to hunt, then wait a few more years and draw the early ANY LEGAL WEAPON tag and hunt with a bow. Simple. The way I see it, archers have the most opportunity because they can hunt on the any weapon tags too! A few years...

Saw 60+ elk on a trail ride on the north end of the unit on the 4th holiday. Even heard a few spike bugles after a thunder shower passed through. My experience is that early on you have to get a ways off the roads and away from the ATV traffic to see elk. Glass the old burns 30 min each side...

I feel your pain, Jims. Losing the nonres bonus tags is painful for those of us with or close to max points. But if I remember right, the Board upped the number of tags in 2017 or 2018 a on account of the drought, so the 2020 reduction was not unexpected. I may have to move back to UT to draw...

Idaho - 2012

I hunted the early rifle last year in the "roadless" area on the north end of the Manti. Not really roadless in the wilderness sense, but fewer roads than the rest of the Unit. It was a nice piece of country to hunt from horseback without ATVs buzzing everywhere. I can confirm that sheep...

We dealt with sheep last year on the Manti. We planned to camp on the north end of the unit just south of the burn, but moved farther south to get away from the sheep. We could see and hear them when we went back in to haul my bull out.
