I am not sure what the heck I am going to do with my Dads mounts when my parents pass to the other side. There's only 2 mounts of his that I would consider keeping that hold special memories for me. He's got some African stuff but mostly only western big game. Have any of you faced this yet? I hate to think of throwing them away. Just thinking out loud.....I have many more years with my Dad to go hunt but I do think about this as I'll have to deal with it in the future.

Well Wisz!

It Won't Be A Good Day For You!

But Start YANKING Pictures & Other Girl Stuff That's On The Walls!

Ms Wisz Will WHOOP Your Ass!

But She'll Get Over It!

I think about this for my own kids. I have so much hanging on the wall and none of them are going to want it all. They’ll all take one or two I suppose. Really what I think I’ll do is after I’m done paying for my youngest two’s school we’re buying a cabin somewhere. Before I die I’ll just hang them all in there and leave the property to the kids. Be the best place for memories to collect dust

I have told my kids that I don't expect them to keep any of my mounts. I know it'll break their hearts getting rid of them but I am dead for Christ sake so no guilt needed!

So?

You're telling Them Basically You Don't Want Them To Have Any Of Them?

I saw a full body mount Dall sheep for 6k in Ft Worth here recently in a shop. Buddy saw a full slam for sale for 5k last fall outside FT Worth. I feel your pain. knowingly a guy put effort into all those animals. Guess build a bigger house!!?? Or man cave and honor a guys hunt we don’t know. I’d have a hard time passing a guys Slam for 5k. Wifes fam has convenience stores. I’m already planning. Not my own mounts. But finds. Destination stops. Like the old days. Just gotta make sure all family is on board.

I made that decision a while back; sold all of them. It was not as hard emotionally as I thought it would be, You will not get anywhere near what you have invested but so be it. My mounts ended up going to several different states which surprised me. The last mount was a caribou from the Alaskan Peninsula which for some reason had not sold. I took it along with a full pickup load of other items to a really large flea market. Several guys ended up in bidding war and it brought more than I was looking to get.. $3,000. My kids made me a really nice video and large scrap book of all of them for my 80th. I visit with these often and feel good that I did not burden my kids. At some point all we have left of our journey here are the memories, hopefully pleasant ones.

That's a great way to handle it. The way I see it, they are your memories not your kids. I may do the same some day.

My wife sold her Father's mounts to the Cabela's sporting good store in Boonetown, Nevada. They took the 4 rams, billy goat, antelope, and black tail deer. The antelope and billy goat made honorable mention with Boone and Crockett.
They passed on the shoulder mount elk and grizzly bear. I do not know if they still buy mounts as this was about 15-17 years ago.

I have thought about this a lot. I know no one in the family will be even slightly interested in keeping any mounts or antlers or anything of the kind after I’m gone or my brother in law is gone. We are the last of us that think mounts are cool. I kind of had the idea this might be the case a long time ago so I always went with a European mount of my stuff but we have a few antelope and mule deer shoulder mounts that are impressive. Impressive in quality, not as much score. One idea I have is to take them apart and sell them to an antler buyer along with the last of my shed collection to take care of it before the family tosses them into the 40 yard dumpster while cleaning up the place after my corpse is hauled away.

I guess I’m pretty lucky as all my kids hunt and at least one have been with me when I harvested most of the animals. So they have at least vested memories in most of the mounts. Plus they all have big homes with plenty of room. I’m very fortunate and blessed.

I'll take my dad's stuff. Two nice bucks and two Euro Elk. My basement has a 42 foot wall that can handle several more animals on it... though, my wife doesn't know any of this yet, so, I'll have to sneak them in and hope she doesn't notice... 🤣

This is exactly why I do Euro mounts no one is going to want my mounts that I shot unless some liar comes along and concocks some story about him shooting them.
My son wants the two mounts I have as well as my Elk Euro mounts I'm sure the rest will be given away. I also have the two fish mounts. Crazy what we paid for them and for the most part they are worthless to anyone but the guy who shot them.
