Update on my OnX experience - It worked great on my recent hunt. Numerous times, we got within 100 yards of property boundaries, so it was nice to be confident we were on public ground. I like the phone app - I can have a phone, email & web (when service is available), app for my SPOT...
LAST EDITED ON Nov-04-16 AT 08:18AM (MST)[p]I liked Trimble's app, but they've stopped supporting it. I tried Gaia for a Wyoming antelope hunt, but they don't even have the correct BLM maps. Numerous places their maps showed property as BLM when it wasn't! Customer service said they're...
I believe it means he has there has to be at least one tag/season available for that specie that is still open when he turns 12. For example, if his birthday is Jan 10, he can apply for an elk PP since there are still late seasons open. He cannot apply for a pronghorn PP since all the...
In situations where I need a light, I hold a small flashlight low and shine the light down and just a few feet ahead. That way all the deer will see is a glow moving through the brush. I know I've walked very close to deer without spooking them by doing this. Of course, if they smell you the...
LAST EDITED ON Oct-06-12 AT 04:45PM (MST)[p]Saw these two near Boulder on my way to work. Definately the biggest I've seen around here. Interesting that one is in full velvet. Just curious, any guesses on how wide that one on the right is and what he would score? Unfortunately, I couldn't...
Tagless- If you've got a spare $200M the current owner might be interested, seeing as he bought it for a mere $175M in 2007.
SB- That explanation on the ram tags makes sense. Any advice on how to get an "invite"? On second thought, I probably don't hang with the right social circle...
My son drew one of the tags for this year, so I'll find out what it's like. We had been applying for the Chancellor Ranch youth tag, but was always beat out by one kid with more points. Now that property is now longer leased by the DOW. I found some info on the RMBS forum that made this sound...
Catchaser-
Looks now like we'll be heading up next weekend. Thanks for the intel. How much snow is there? Are roads passable? Will we need chains?

I'm looking for suggestions for a place to late cow hunt for my son and his friend. Both got skunked earlier for both deer and elk, so am looking for something to improve their odds and put something in the freezer. We plan to hunt the week after Xmas and they can hunt any open unit. Right...
Here's a pretty unusual rub/scrape. I found this a couple years ago in late December near Estes Park, CO. Some elk had raked the tree and torn up the ground pretty good. Anyone else seen anything like this so late in the year?
I was scouting unit 61 last weekend. Saw 11 bulls. None with any cows. Didn't hear a peep, either. It was very warm (upper 80s day, maybe 60 at night), so that may be keeping them quiet.
I agree with Oak on the bulls. Trophy quality on most ranches around Craig is pretty low, although I'd expect you'd have a good chance at a legal+ bull (as evidenced by the 80% figure). If you're patient and willing to get of the roads, you'd up your chances on a better bull. I'd compare their...
I blew my hunting budget last year on a sheep hunt, so I'm staying close to home this year. I don't think I'll even go to Wyoming for antelope this year. With deer down, I thought this might be the year to put some effort into elk.
I seem to be stuck in PP Purgatory. I'm a resident with 13 points and had my sights set on a 201 tag (esp. after being there 10 years ago on an antelope hunt). Now I realize with "point creep" it will still be quite a few years before I can draw a super-premium tag. My estimate is that it...
I hunted Shirly Basin (47) in '05. Saw decent numbers, but nothing big like 7 Mag said. There were some good bucks on private land, however. I drew a type 2 leftover tag, so number of hunters wasn't too bad, but I'd guess opening day would be a bit crazy. I agree that I wouldn't spend 2PP on...
My 13-year-old son has an unfilled cow tag and we are hoping to get out this weekend in one of the still-open units (85, 128, 133 & 134). Does anyone have any knowledge of public land within these units (Spanish Peaks State Wildife Area, Black Hawk State Trust, Saint Charles State Trust, etc.)...

I second the thoughts on antelope for youth. This was our 4th trip together to Wyoming, but the first he was old enough to hunt.
The rifle is a Winchester model 100 autoloader carbine in .308. It was my first rifle and was given to me by my grandfather. It's a great kids gun - plenty of...
Near Kaycee. It was good country - big hills and gullies with mix of grass & sagebrush. The photos don't do it justice. I normally hunt public land, but we ended up on a private ranch due to access issues.
