I have a 300 WSM that is DEADLY accurate with the 165 gr Barnes Vortex ammo. Wanting to know if anyone uses this load for elk or if you think it is plenty for elk out to 400 yards.
THANKS!

We use the 168 ttsx in a 7mm for elk killed all we shot at! Its a great bullet!

I would say that is sufficient out to 600 yards on elk. I love those bullets. The will penetrate anything, and a 165 will outperform any lead/copper jacket 180 grain every time. I would almost guarantee you on a broadside double lung shot through the ribcage at 400 yards would result in an exit.

I have seen no evidence that this penetration results in a lack of damage either. Wound channels seem large with as much internal damage as anything else I have seen.

They do also seem to shoot very accurately in everything.

I would not feel like you need to pick your shots at all. if you have to put it through a shoulder...do it, it will probably still exit.

Haven't used them on elk, but have on similar type game.

Hands down the WORSE performing bullet I've used. I'd rather be stuck with corelokt!

They're as close to an all purpose hunting bullet as exists today.

On clean lung shots I can think of bullets that will do the same job faster, but for any other situation they're tops.

Stay thirsty my friends
