2016 CO Archery buck

I have been waiting 9 years to draw this tag. I was able to have my 8 year old son with me when I shot this buck. It will be a memorable hunt for both of us. Couldn't be happier with the outcome as I was a little conflicted if I should hunt out a big buck but be alone, or find a small or marginal buck and be with my son. I was lucky enough to have both wishes come true.

The shot was 30 yds broadside. Double lung. We were able to watch him fall about 50 yds from where he was hit. Each and every steak and roast will be savored with the memories of the hunt.

Out of curiosity and my lack of scoring bucks, what are some educated guesses on score? I will say that the widest outside width is 28". But being a 3x4, I'm not sure how that adds up.

Thanks for looking at my post, I wish as good of luck to anyone else still flippin sticks out there.

He won't score well but from your post.I get the idea you're not to worried about that. He's a really cool buck with great mass and the experience and his look would make him as good as a 200" deer to me. Congrats sharing that with your son and a good lethal shot taught more and means more than another point and a few extra inches.

Great story and a great buck. Congratulations to you and your son. That is the true definition of why I hunt!

I wouldn't have any qualms whatsoever waiting 9-10 years to shoot that buck with my boys at my side. Awesome job dad.

I'll take a stab at the score.

...I've added up the memory-inches with your son-inches and the excellent lean protein-inches and the total is: PERFECTION AND A BEAUTIFUL TROPHY!

28" wide 3x4.....you did well! Congratulations and kudos for sharing it with your kids.

Damn he's got a big head on him. Congrats on getting a fine buck with your kid right there!

I'll score him as big, heavy, 28 inch buck, that was killed with your son. Awesome and great trophy and memories. I would have like to seen the smiles on both of your faces when that buck was shot and dropped. Congrats!

Heck yes, he looks like a fine buck to me. It's hard getting them with a bow! Good for you.

The body/head on that deer is enormous.

That buck is 172 gross 3x4. I think yours may crack 170, hard to tell how deep the front forks are based on your photo.

I echo the sentiments about the joys of hunting with your son, but I too like to think about the score. I know that sometimes it is heresy on this site, but I even like it when folks share a NET score. To me, this buck looks about 175 gross, and I think you have a pretty decent shot at making the 145 net P&Y minimum.
Great buck and glad you made the right choice to take your son!
Congrats!

Thanks for all the comments. Like I mentioned, I don't really care what it scores because the memories will far outweigh the score. The only reason I was curious is that if it makes P&Y it will be my first. That would only be a little extra icing on the already beautiful cake.

Also, here's another shot of my buck.

Right on! That's awesome stuff. Congratulations! I arrowed my first buck this year on my first archery hunt and now I'm hooked. That's an outstanding buck and being able to share it with your son makes it perfect. Great job!

RE: 2016 COc Archery buck

Congratulations on a beautiful buck. Thank you for sharing the photo and story. I agree that his net score should be enough to make P&Y if you decide to enter him. The only way to find out is to put a tape on him.
Here's a link.

It isn't hard to measure it yourself and get close to what an official measurer would score him.
If I had to guess I would say 171" gross and 155" net. Put a tape on him and tell us what you get.

You can't beat killing a buck like that with a child next to you... While on a recent hunt here in Utah, I found a small 4-point, 150" class. My kids were all wanting me to kill it... I told them if they could be patient, daddy would bring home a bigger buck and they agreed with me. If they hadn't, there was definitely a little part of me saying, "you could kill this deer while they watch"...

Congrats. And I'd say he's a 170" buck as a 3x4. Very nice. I especially love the drop beam.

Update on the score- He came in at just over 160 Gross and 151 Net, by my own measurements. Like I said before, I could not be more satisfied with the way this hunt went. It makes all the excitement and nerves of drawing the tag and leading up to opening day all the more worth it. Kind of like leading up to the game when your favorite football team beats their rival again for the 6th time in a row. :D

A couple of pics that I pulled from some video my buddy got of my shot. The first is the arrow in flight, in the second that white dot is my noc-turnal nock just before it disappeared.

Those are great pictures. Nice shot placement. Thanks for posting the score. I was interested in how your buck taped out. My son shot one very similar. It's at the taxidermist and we can't measure it until we get it back. Looks like yours might edge it out on mass otherwise very similar. Like others have said, the score doesn't matter but it's one more thing to talk about when remembering the story.

Pines_N_Tines- I read your write up, and that is a great story. After my hunt experience this year with my oldest son, that is the next great adventure to look forward to is to see him get his first buck. Your son's buck looks to have deep forks. I will bet they score very closely. Congrats! BTW, I forgot to mention in my story that my Father in law was with me and my son when I got my buck. It's great to have the generations involved, it adds so much to the experience.

Congrats...I get what you are saying....you made the right decision IMO....memories with your son will be with you both forever....that is priceless.....happy for you.....family first ....wish more felt that way....
