This one will gross over 90" I am really proud of him. The photo doesnt do him a lot of justice but he is really big. I will try and post some more pictures later that show his spread and tine length a little better. Well I thought my fellow Coues deer hunters would really appreaciate this picture. I got him in unit 34B so that makes him even more impressive, because that is one of the units that doesnt produce very big bucks. I have him at the taxiderist right now. I love Coues deer hunting.
Well I guess I had better tell you the story about what happend. My bro-in-law and I got up really early and hiked to the top of the mountain we wanted to hunt before the sun came up and sat and glassed for a long time, but could not find any bucks, only a few does. Then all the sudden my bro-in-law got all exited and said hey look their is a cougar! So we wached the cougar trying to stock some does for a while but they busted him and ran off. Then the cougar went over the top of a ridge out of our line of site. Well about then we decided to start beating the brush and hike the ravines we didnt have much luck with that either so we went to the highest peak of the mountain to glass from there and hopefully glass a buck bedded. When we got up there we decided to go seperate ways and cover a little more ground. I ended up hiking all the way back down the mountain and as soon as I got down I hear shots back where I left my bro-in-law so I radioed him to see if he got his deer and he had. So I started back up the hill to go help him out. It took me about an hour and a half to get back up there to him and he was really upset. I asked him what he was upset for and he said right after he had shot his buck and gone down to start gutting it out a huge buck jumped up 30 yards from him and ran off. It was getting pretty late in the afternoon and I was running out of steam so I decided not to go over the next ridge after the bigger buck. We got his deer cleaned up and by the time we got back to the truck it was pretty late and we had been walking back in the pitch dark with all of our equipment plus a buck. I told my bro-in-law I didnt think I was going to be able to hike as much tommorow. He agreed so the next moring we waited till the sun came up and glassed some mountains right from our camp. Once again we only saw a bunch of does. So I took some asprin to help fight off some of the previous days soreness, and we decided to go over the mountain again to where we had last seen the big buck go over the mountain. Well a few hours later we were in the canyon that we thougt the buck would be in and we glassed for a few hours with no avail. Then we decided to push the brush again and see if we could push a buck out of his bed, because that is what happend the day before the deer wouldnt come out of there beds untill you had gotten to within 50 feet or so of them. Well we pushed the brush for the next few hours and only jumped up a few doe. Then just when I had given up and started to head down the mountain so I could get back to the camp before dark my bro-in-law said there he is and pointed right down the ridge in front of us. I looked down and could see the rack with my naked eye so I threw my gun to my sholder and I found the deer in the cross hairs I was trying to take a nice slow shot, but the buck was trotting through the brush and I couldnt get a good broadside shot. I went ahead and shot anyway and my bro-in-law who was standing right behind me said you hit just to the side of him. And right then the buck turned broadside and I hit him with the second shot. He ran over a saddle and out of our field of view, but we knew he was hurt really bad by the way he was running. So we ran down the mountain to see if we could see where he was going to run to. When we got down to the spot we saw him cross we saw a huge blood trail and started to follow it. The blood trail was really thick and we only had to follow it about 60 yards and there he lay. Anyways, needless to say I was elated and we started celebrtating with a whole bunch of high fives and congratulations to each other I feel like it is as much my bro-in-law's deer as it is mine. Well I shot him at about 4:15 and it took us several hours to get back to camp. Unfortunatly we had to hike back in the dark both days, but we both got our deer and it made a lot of really fun memories.
Anyways let me know what you think.
Thanks, Knifeboy
