I am looking for a riflescope for a 300 mag from $800-$1000 available at Cabelas (I have $800 in free cabelas bucks).

I have no experience at all with any kind of scopes that adjust for range and or windage.

I am looking for something simple and easy to use in the field.

please give me a few ideas to start looking at.

I have a conquest 4.5x14 with target turrets and love it. Once you get your velocities use a program to get your drops and apply it to your clicks on your scope. I have used mine and they work.

O--one
B--big
A--ass
M--mistake
A--america

Vortex sales a custom turret for there vipers scopes. They are around $120.00 I think. You give them the temp, elevation, and bc and they make a custom cap for you. You would have a lot of many left over to my a good rangefinder if you don't have one. It's a must have.

ELKOHOLIC,

I'm new to this as well. How do I know the temperature and elevation where I will take my shot? I live in north Idaho and those two items will vary widely. Even a tree stand hunter will get different temps?

Or

Are those variables really just worthless and without measurable effect on shots in the 500-800 yard class?

Thanks

Leupold 4.5-14X40 CDS will run your $600 + tax at Cabela's. Zero your rifle with its favorite load at 200 yards. Use the free ballistics program www.gseven.com/ballistic-program and plug in your load data. I guess the elevetion and temperature where I will be hunting. As long as you are +or- 2,000 feet and 20 degrees, you will be close enough. I run a drop chart in 25 yard increments with "clicks" in the drop column, inches in the windage column, three times. Once with wind a 5 mph, once with 10 mph and once at 15 mph. If the wind is over 15 mph, I'm getting closer than 400 yards before I pull the trigger. I generate my own field drop chart that looks like this:

Range Clicks 5MPH 10MPH 15MPH
250 4 1 3 4
275 6 2 4 5
300 8 2 4 6
325 10 3 5 8
350 12 3 6 9
375 14 3 7 10
400 16 4 8 12
425 19 4 9 13
450 21 5 10 15
475 23 6 11 17
500 26 6 12 19
525 28 7 14 21
550 31 8 15 23
575 34 8 17 25
600 36 9 18 27
625 39 10 20 30
650 42 11 22 33
675 45 12 24 35
700 48 13 26 38
725 51 14 28 41
750 54 15 30 44
775 57 16 32 48
800 60 17 34 51
825 64 18 37 55
850 67 20 39 59
875 70 21 42 63
900 74 22 45 67
925 77 24 48 71
950 81 25 50 76
975 85 27 54 80
1000 89 28 57 85

Range your target, dial the number of clicks and hold the inches for the windage. I have tested this chart out to 600 yards in 15 mph crossing wind and it is dead nuts on. My chart is spaced correctly to line up with the headings and I use gird on print option to have lines across and up and down. Takes about 15 seconds to range and dial.

Also, the G Seven program has a Trajectory Validation option. You take your rifle to the range and test the real world against the projected drop. Plug in your actual results variance in the TV screen and the program will correct the projection to match your real world observations and propagate the correct drops at all ranges out to 2,000 yards.

I prefer the stock MOA knob. You can use it for any load. If you do use a knob etched for a particular load, make sure you use the G Seven software and the Trajectory Validation before you send the data to Leupold to have your knob etched. Use the data from the G Seven chart to send to Leupold and you will get the most accurate etching possible.

1+ on leupold
and vxII or higher you can have them put a custom turret on for 60$
we shot antelope this year with that setup at
933
678 and
408 yards
with my gun
dial and pull the trigger

All options discussed are great.
I would also add:
Swarovski Z3, with long range turrets.
It is the easiest scope to use for long range.
Comes with color coding. look into it.
Great scope, and EASY to use.

I like the vortex 4-16x50. Just has a elevation turret no windage. you do not have to worry about windage getting bumped off. It has hash marks for wind. if it is so windy that you have to adjust more than 6 inches or so it is a very difficult shot. The hslr has a simple reticle also. If you are interested pm me, I know where you can get a smoking deal on one.

The scope I am talking about is the viper hslr. I know where you can get one for 300-350.

i have the same scope as schoolhousegrizz on my .300WM and although i havent shot it much i love it so far. i got a great deal from Cameraland NY through gr8fuldoug on here. they are Monster Muleys supporters and i bought an open box/demo scope that was significantly cheaper than new but didnt even look like it was handled when i got it. gr8fuldoug is highly recommended. look in the classifieds here.
