Are there REALLY any Elk around Alamo Lake? Seems to me they are the jackalope of Alamo. I've spent over $500 in fule and 30-40 hours hiking and scouting and still have not found any positive proof Elk exist in this area. Any advise would be greatly appreciated

Contact Stu Conkey (sp?) the Region 4 WM for the Alamo Lake area.
I did hear about a big bull taken out of that area a few years ago. Most of the elk are on the north side of the lake and river that feeds it. It's a tough area to hunt and may not be very productive.

I know of 3 bulls that have been taken out of there in the last couple of years but good luck finding them.

this is a limited elk area remember!

they have killed elk there every yr since they started hunts at alamo!

Since it is a limited area - the elk get moved out in a hurry - but they do come back- it's usualluy the firstguys inthe first few days of the season who get to tag one - then they push them out.

timing is everything on this hunt. you can spend a week or 2 there and never see an elk if they've already been hunted before you get there !!

Lots of pressure on limited number of elk

Yes people do kill elk at Alamo Lake -

Do you have a contact number for Stu or another game warden in that area?

What is considered the "Start" of the season? There are 3 opening dates January 1- March 31, Sep 16- Oct 20 and Dec 1- 31. What would be the best time to hunt? The write up on the G&F site claims Elk are around all year and do not leave in the summer. I think it would be insane hunting that area in September or Early October. Temps still at or near 100.

This is the last number I had for Stewart Kohnke. 928-684-3763.

Many years ago I saw a couple of elk on the north shoreline, as did some eagle nest watchers up there.

I worked on projects with BLM down there and spoke to the area ranchers who told me of one of their son's getting a bull there.

Personally, I think they should use Hueys with M-60's, fly low and open up the canopies and shoot all they can find. The use of sportsmen to solve this issue of elk in the Alamo ACEC (area of critical environmental concern) is not working very well to say the least.

This whole deal in a simplified statement goes like this. It is a result of a pi$$ing match between the AZG&FD and BLM over the burros and elk down there on the ACEC. G&F wanted the burros out of there and BLM said OK, but you got to get the elk out of there to!

Good riddance to the burros. Driving into that lake at night is worse than crossing the Navajo reservation.
