LAST EDITED ON Feb-24-11 AT 03:58PM (MST)[p]Some advice before hunt this unit..or others in area 10. GET IN THE BEST SHAPE OF YOUR LIFE. I had a 101 landowner tag and hunted from Aug to Nov. Their are some monsters to be had, but they are up very high. Heavy snows didn't come, even during late rifle, most of the big boys were still above 9,000 feet. I thought I was in good shape, but after a couple of 9000 ft assaults, I was cooked. It came down to how much pain verses how much you love to hunt. Getting within 600 yds of 180+ bucks after six hours of vert climbing, and to be to spent to traverse around another vert 1000 yrds for the shot really sucks. I just didn't have it in me. Shot a small 5x4 down a lot lower, and was okay with that. If the weather doesn't come, be prepared to hunt HIGH.

Ps. Not sure how to post pic off of my HTC evo cell. Pm me if you want to help.

That place always kicks my arse. Sometimes, while their, I ask my self why I come here. The thirst, the loneliness, the heat, the thunderstorms, the freeze dried food, the altitude sickness, the verticle. Then I get home and all year I think about that place. The incredable scenery, The Mtn. goats, The groups of bucks, The ice cold spring water, The cant wait to see in that next basin, and the possibility of sneakin on a perfectly stalkable, P&Y, Velvet covered Buck. God, here I go again.

I felt a little mentally broken after the hunt because of what I could have shot, and because I did not get in good enough shape. I glad you agree...that hunt is a true test.

it is a great place to hunt! you always have the chance of seeing Bighorns, Goats & great Mule Deer. Don't beat your self up Ive been after some great Bucks up in those mountains and ask myself WTF? why do I do it. it's been a last choice of mine for years and I have seen some great Deer, but struggled with being successful there. Wilderness athletes altitude advantage & Advil help :)))

Does Wildernes Athlt. Alt. really work? Ive never heard of it. Last time I came back I went to the Doc and asked him if there was a RX for altitude sickness. He gave me a RX for it. 2 pills, take one the day before and one when you get up their. Havent tried it yet. Funny thing though, he said there are reports that Viagra actually helps with Altitude sickness.LOL I told him I usally solo hunt mule deer so thats not a good idea!

Oh come on Fat. You and I walked up and down those things for weeks. Besides that I was packin half your stuff! I thought it was a walk in the park. lol

(So do not worry, saying, ?What shall we eat?? or ?What shall we drink?? or ?What shall we wear?? For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Matthew 6:31-36)

Funny how that works.

Thanks for the heads up! I actually just got back from a run and logged on to read this before crashing. I'll be fine as long as I stay around the elevation I live at...600ft:) Hoping to draw that tag anyway!

None of my friends here in the midwest can figure out why I love going out west even though I get my arse handed to me, and have yet to come home with a taxidermy bill after 3 trys. I feel sorry for them. I really do.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-06-11 AT 08:23PM (MST)[p]Gazelle,

I live at 300-600ft and have used Wilderness Athlete Altitude Advantage for my three trips to Utah the past few years (9500 ft). I have never had a hint of symptoms and that includes a regular head ache! I'm not about to NOT try it only to find out it did work!

P.S. that company has excellent customer service!

If you can find one $4-5 thousand.

That's a lotta dough for a 160 buck!

I wouldn't even think of buying a land owner tag for the rubies. You got 2 pretty good chances of drawing the archery tag each year.If your gonna buy a landowner tag I'd pick a better unit, somewhere that you have a decent chance of killing a 180 buck.

The rubies are imo the best place for someone looking to hone their stalking skills. Lots of bucks so you can attempt multiple stalks a day. But after hunting a half dozen other areas I won't go back.
