Best first hunt option?

Me and a buddy want to start a yearly Colorado hunt. My family has a cabin up in Woodland Park, outside of the Springs. I'd like to start to learn the ropes. What would a few of the best "starter hunts" be to learn? I'm not afraid to spend a few seasons without success, as long as we're learning something. I could do bow or firearms, muleys or elk. We currently have no preference points. Are there any hunts that we could try this upcoming season with the chance of seeing some game????

Looking for general pointers... not exact spots. It's hard to learn a new area when you're 3 states away. I've got time set aside this summer to scout / learn, but need to understand what to apply for before then.

Thanks for any tips / advice.
