blazingsaddle, the DWR estimates 65% of spikes get harvested on average on spike hunts. To me that adds up to 65% fewer mature bulls down the road to hunt. A good example is three units in southern Utah, the Dutton/Fish Lake/Boulder units. Dutton and Boulder have the same size herd, yet Dutton has almost 1/3 more tags with about the same quality of animals. Fish Lake, partly still recovering from the cow over-harvest has 3 times more elk than Dutton yet issues fewer LE tags. Dutton is the only one of the three that does NOT issue spike tags. Balance is the key, and there is NO WAY to ensure balance by randomly killing spikes.

The statewide spike hunt will also affect in NEGATIVE way the LE archery deer hunters on the San Juan and Book Cliff units. The ripple effect would be huge.

I AM SO WITH YOU ON THE HARVEST DATA ISSUE. WE NEED IT FOR ALL HUNTED ANAMILS. NOT JUST LE HUNTS!!!!!
THERE HAS TO BE AWAY FOR THIS TO BE DONE WITH THE COMPUTER AGE, THAT WOULD NOT COST TO MUCH.
SEEMS LIKE THERE IS MUCH AGREEMENT ON WAHT NEEDS TO BE DONE.

NOW THE QUESTION IS HOW TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.
