Canon XL-1

I own a canon xl-1 video camera. When I turn it on there is a red flashing icon in the middle of the screen. It is shaped like a box, with a diagonal line through the box, and a plus mark on the upper right corner of the box. I cannot get it to go away. Does anyone have any idea, and could help me out?

All that is is the internal battery is out or missing. It is one of those flat quarter sized batteries that any camera shop, radio shack should be able to get you.
