LAST EDITED ON Jun-13-19 AT 01:26PM (MST)[p]Hello, My name is Cody. Long time reader, first time question asker. I have drawn a Colorado 66 muzzleloader deer tag for Sept 14-22. I am not looking for secret spots (unless you wanted to share one ?) or handouts but I was hoping to talk to anyone who has hunted this season in the unit or willing to share the experience or story (Good or bad). Any recommendations of trailheads, elevations, drop camp outfitters, mountain ranges, ect would be great to get me started. Im setup to go in horseback, backpack or dayhunt so terrain and camp style is not an issue. I have been scanning On X and Google earth and am waiting to hear back from the units biologist so Ive started my homework. We plan on making a trip over to the unit next month to look it over and take my boys camping. So if anyone has any recommendations of country to check out while we are there I would appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

Welcome to MM Cody, I read posts for a few years also before deciding to contribute to the conversations. Met some nice people through MM. Be advised, you might get some grief from some members as you are asking for advice with your first post. I can't help you with info on unit 66 (so I guess I'm of no use) but I'm thinking about hunting muley's during the 4th season one of these years. Where are you from?

Thanks for the reply and heads up.Im from N.E. Nevada. Ive actually contributed positive or helpful comments in the past, But its been several years. I had to start a "new" account today because I could not remember my user name to reset my password. I believe this is actually the first time Ive ever inquired on here about a unit for myself. My family is out of town and I had hunting on the brain as usual this morning so I thought I would reach out to see if anyone else had tried this unit with a smokepole and was hoping to hear there experiences when they hunted it and maybe a few pictures of any bucks they may have taken from the unit.

I would backpack, stay mobile. If the bucks have shed velvet (probably with these late muzzy dates), you're going to have to get lucky in the aspens or av chutes. Get into basins that held deer in the summer, hunt below tree line if they aren't in the open.
It's going to take some serious effort to be successful on a mature deer during muzzy this year. Goodluck!

I would look high as well, unless you know the specific whereabouts of a low country buck. Think sheep country...

Thanks for the input. Will get back there next month to get my boots and eyes on the country. Hopefully they stay high in glassable country and not turn into mule deer once they strip the velvet. I appreciate the reply

Thanks HiMtn. The sheep comment helps me with starting elevations?

How did you do Cody in 66? My buddy and I are looking to Backpack muzzy that unit this year. Looking to spend Two weeks of vacation out there.
